Tennis 101. The Belgian girls know how to do it

Saturday, January 9th, 2010

The Brisbane final was the one everybody wanted. Both former number 1’s and multiple grand slam winners and comeback queens battling in out in the final.

Nobody was disappointed in a final that featured everything and shows us what we were missing the last couple of years watching boring 18 year old “next big thing” baseliners.

The highlights tell it all.

Stats of the decade!

Davydenko, wow.

The Champion

The Champion

Well he actually did it. He won the year end masters title in London and with it beat 3 grand slam winners over the space of a week. Impressive? I certainly think so. He has yet to win a slam and is definetly not many peoples favorites to do so, but he is definitely capable of it

For Davydenko its the dream end to his season. For the others, not so much. But what is for sure is that Federer has cemented his place as world number one and has shown that he isn’t ready to give it up just yet…….much more to come

Federer and Del Potro through!

Thursday, November 26th, 2009
Should have reached a little further. Sorry Andy!

Should have reached a little further. Sorry Andy!

Murray, to the disgust of much of the British public, is out of this years year end masters. Even though he was victorious over over Verdasco, he didnt have a high enough percentage of games won to get through to the semi’s. Had Murray won 2 more games over his matches he would have got through to the semi’s. It’s complicated stuff, bit the decision eventually came!

Del Potro deserved it.

Tomorrow will decide the other two semifinalists! Soderling is already through, I think Davydenko will be the other.

Smart

Smart

I love the Swiss Davis cup tracksuits. They always look really professional when they play.

Davis Cup results:

  • The Swiss are back in the world group after beating Italy :)
  • Thiemo De Bakker beat Monfils in 4 sets. I’m impressed. The dutch youngster was said to be headed for big things but nothing much happened. Hopefully this is the start he needs!
  • India, Serbia and Sweden all won their groups.
  • Spain v Czech Republic in the final in December. How much money would you bet that Spain will play it on clay?

Roger makes history, but Roddick made it unbelievable

Sunday, July 5th, 2009

Roger Federer won his 15th grand slam title to make him the most successful man in grand slam history and will regain the number 1 ranking on Monday. An epic battle that lasted over 4 hours with a final score of 5-7 7-6 7-6 3-6 16-14. A real match that ended on a Roddick error but the final set could have gone either way.

Alot of credit has to go to Roddick, he came out and played his best and really fought hard and if he didn’t miss that volley on set point in the second set, who knows? It was a great two weeks for Roddick and I’m sure he will gain alot of confidence.

Something disappointing though at the presentation when Federer showed off a jacket with “15″ on the back of it which he put on when he lifted the trophy. Very arrogant I (and many others too I’m sure) think.

Wimbledon Final!

Federer

Federer

Federer v. Roddick

A very exciting match today. Federer takes on Andy Roddick who he beat in the final here twice before. Roddick is playing very well lately and Federer is playing pretty amazingly it has to be said.

The head to head record is phenomenally top heavy in favour of Federer

  • Federer leads the series 18-2. Extremely impressive.
  • They played 3 times on grass, all at Wimbledon, Federer won them all.
  • Roddick beat Federer once in the last 6 years.
  • Federer never lost to Roddick in a grand slam
  • This list goes on and on..
  • The odd’s are truly against the America.
  • Federer is chasing a record 15th grand slam title which will make him the man with the most major singles titles in history.

Pete Sampras said he also may attend the final so the pressure will be on with some of the all time greats looking on.

Play starts at 2pm.

Enjoy watching history being made :)

Poor Venus couldn’t make it three in a row

Venus Rosewater Dish

Venus Rosewater Dish

As you probably realise by now, I am not a fan of the Williams sisters at all, especially Serena. I was watching the final today with the hope that Venus would win it, or better yet, come back from match point down to truly devastate Serena but it just wasn’t too be. :( Anyone who watched the matched today would have been disappointed. Hardley any rallies of note and not a singles sliced ground-stroke. Very disappointing.

I suppose the only consolation is that the trophy/plate “thing” the Womens singles winner gets is called the “Venus Rosewater Dish” so I can relax knowing that Serenas victory will ALWAYS remind her of her sister anytime she thinks of her title. :)

Roddick v Federer Sunday :D

He deserved it

He deserved it

Yep its true, Roddick beat Murray today in 4 sets and played some of the best tennis he’s ever played, judging by the highlights. He played a very smart match and came out with a great game play to beat Murray. He serve and volleyed loadssss of time and was just really consistent. Well done Roddick.

Federer obviously won against Haas too. It wasn’t the most exciting of matches with both players holding serve fairly routinely until Federer could break Haas in the 2nd and 3rd sets for a fairly comfortable straight sets victory.

A quote I made in an earlier post before Wimbledon started a few weeks ago held up pretty well :p

The British public fooling themselves into thinking that they will have a British winner.

And I suppose I should mention the bitches Williams sisters since I “forgot” to yesterday. They both wo their semi-finals for an overrated final against each other tomorrow(match-fixing, anyone). Fantastic… Oh, and center court was so empty during the women’s matches yesterday, it was bordering on a joke!

Tommy Haas is definetly the story of the tournament

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009
Mr. Roddick

Mr. Roddick

Haas who suffered many injuries and whom was surely destined for great things when he was world number 2 and rising when his parents were almost killed in a car accident in 2002. Haas took the year off to take care of him and never reached such heights in the ranking again, well, not yet anyway!

Haas is the 24th seed but never reached a semifinal here before. His solid all court game and amazing backhand took him through the tournament so far and I really hope he gives Federer a good match, although I think beating him is just a step too far.

Juan Carlos Ferrero was sadly beaten by Murray today.

Roddick and Hewitt played a 5 set epic with Hewitt showing the fighting qualities that took him to world number one but he just couldn’t get the better of Roddick today.

The semi-final lineup:

  • Federer v. Haas
  • Roddick v. Murray
