Gulbis

College has gotten very busy lately and I just don’t have the time to update as much as I used to so I’m gonna try my best to type my posts on my lunchbreak from now on!

Dubai was a real shame for a second year in a row. It’s not that there wasn’t some quality players, there certainly was, but when you don’t see either Federer or Nadal in the lineup, I automatically think its a small tour even that doesn’t get much recognition. In Dubai, however, it definitely isn’t the case. The amount of money Dubai has invested into that tournament is incredible. Under the table appearance fee’s, ridiculously luxurious facilities and an overall glamorous feeling to the whole week are all the order of the day in Dubai and its no wonder it’s one of the favourite stops on the tour.

Djokovic defended his title this week but didn’t look overly impressive. Still, he cements his place as world number 2 and got the job done. It’s good to see Youzhny doing well again his game kinf of slipped the last couple of years and I wondered if he would ever climb back up the rankings.

Biggest surprise of the week has to be Ernest Gulbis not losing a set on the way to the title in Delray Beach. Immensely talented, he just looked like he wasn’t interest the last 18 months. Losing silly matches and putting in awful performances for weeks on end. Hopefully this is the start of something great because he is more than capable of getting inside the top 10 of the rankings.

Other notables

  • Ferrero was one win away from 3 consecutive titles but it wasn’t to be. Outstanding how well he has done over the years.
  • Bryans win their 58th careen titles as a team and have over 600 career match wins….says it all really.
  • Kleybanova and Venus grab some singles titles.
  • Federer should be good to go in Indian Wells after taking a chest infection back from Ethiopia (presumably)

Very exciting day of tennis ahead!

Youzhny

Yesterdays tennis was disappointing enough to be honest. Youzhny was a walkover in the third round and Baghdatis retired against Hewitt which was a highly anticipating meeting. Shame.

Today looks much brighter as loads of exciting matches take to the court.

  • Roddick v. Gonzalez
  • Cilic v. Del Potro (who is making a habit out of silly drawn out matches this week)
  • Kuznetsova v. Petrova (losing an asthonishing 1 game against Clijsters in the last round)
  • Nadal v. Karlovic (could be exciting or really boring)

And if any of you have an iPhone or iPod touch, I highly recommend the official Australian open app. It features live scoring, radio, option to submit questions to the presenters, maps and loads more. Fantastic app. Download it here.

The wonderful world of tennis

Melbourne Park

“The wonderful world of tennis” is a phrase I’ve seen used in the 2005 Australian Open, when I first started watching tennis properly and also the inspiration behind my domain name!

Well its the official start to the grand slam calendar and where better to start it than in Australia! I always thought it was a little strange how soon in the year the AO started, but players don’t really seem to be complaining and most will have played a couple of warm up tournaments prior. Melbourne is always a popular destination on the calendar with all the players as it offers so much more than just tennis. Famous for insane temperatures on court and epic night matches often lasting well into the morning, it should be a fantastic two weeks, filled with great encounters.

Take a look at this video from a charity exhibition some of the players put on to help Haiti earthquake victims. Its really entertaining and a great way to help raise money.

Feels good for the tour to be starting up again..

The Man

..just wish I had Internet fast enough to watch!! :(

Until then I’m just gonna have to watch highlights and keep an eye on the scores. *sigh*

My posts usually open in a very Federer-esque manner but I think I can make an exception. I know I’ve mentioned it so many times, but Justine has returned to the tour and isn’t exactly struggling to hold a rally on the courts! From beating the experienced Petrova in an exhibition before new years to actually doing it for real on Monday in Brisbane (where Petrova was seeded second, ouch), she really is trying to prove that her return is no joke. I missed that ridiculous one handed backhand of hers ,so long may it last.

Naturally Federer made a winning start to his 2010 season beating the now practically veteran Christoph Rochus in straight sets in Doha. Other easy winners were Nadal and Davydenko.

My picks of the day to watch

  • Murray v Kohlschreiber (who knows what kind of form Murray could be in)
  • Berdych v Baghdatis (Whatever happened to him/them? Such a shame)
  • Sharapova v Zheng (Just because its been ages since I’ve heard her scream!)

Live scores here for those who also can’t watch live

2009 – The tennis that was

Heres to an amazing 2010 :)

Heres to an amazing 2010 :)

It was a pretty incredible year for tennis. As we all know, Roger Federer achieved the career grand slam and won back his Wimbledon title he lost to Nadal last year. Alot of people were fearing the worst for the Swiss at the start of the year as he had dropped to a shocking number 2 in the singles rankings in the middle of 2008. Not only did he regain that ranking this year but he beat all the “young up-and-comers” whom many assumed would start to take over the top of the rankings.

The rankings themselves didn’t change much and I’ve been fairly disappointed by it. The top 20 still contains regulars such as Roddick, Davydenko, Haas, Robredo and even Berdych is back in there. With the exception of Del Potro who did some damage on the tour this year, other players such as Cilic, Chardy and especially Ernest Gulbis have all failed to really do enough to win some big tournaments. Pity

And all the rest?

  • Wimbledon got a roof
  • Federer has a family
  • Murray dissapoints again by failing to get a grand slam title as he planned
  • Serena is still a horrible person
  • Clijsters returns to the tour and makes a fool of everyone by winning the US Open singles title
  • Poor Gasquet and his cocaine incident
  • Everyone forgot about Jankovic and Ivanovic
  • Nadal loses his first ever match at the French Open
  • Del Potro showed us he will someday be number 1
  • Nadal had some injury problems but managed to keep his number 2 ranking

I’m hoping for an even better 2010 and thanks for reading my last post of the year :)

Yours in tennis,
Joe

Federer is just generally beterer

mmmhmmmmmmFederer has been named ITF world champion for the 5th time in his career. He had an incredible year and is very fitting for the award.

Serena Williams on the other hand…. She won the same award on the womens side and it’s hard to justify it. Yes, she is currently number 1 in the rankings but her infamous U.S Open outburst should have discounted it her for any such honour. What a great system.

The Champion

The Champion

Well he actually did it. He won the year end masters title in London and with it beat 3 grand slam winners over the space of a week. Impressive? I certainly think so. He has yet to win a slam and is definetly not many peoples favorites to do so, but he is definitely capable of it

For Davydenko its the dream end to his season. For the others, not so much. But what is for sure is that Federer has cemented his place as world number one and has shown that he isn’t ready to give it up just yet…….much more to come

Federer and Del Potro through!

Thursday, November 26th, 2009
Should have reached a little further. Sorry Andy!

Should have reached a little further. Sorry Andy!

Murray, to the disgust of much of the British public, is out of this years year end masters. Even though he was victorious over over Verdasco, he didnt have a high enough percentage of games won to get through to the semi’s. Had Murray won 2 more games over his matches he would have got through to the semi’s. It’s complicated stuff, bit the decision eventually came!

Del Potro deserved it.

Tomorrow will decide the other two semifinalists! Soderling is already through, I think Davydenko will be the other.
