Very exciting day of tennis ahead!

Youzhny

Yesterdays tennis was disappointing enough to be honest. Youzhny was a walkover in the third round and Baghdatis retired against Hewitt which was a highly anticipating meeting. Shame.

Today looks much brighter as loads of exciting matches take to the court.

  • Roddick v. Gonzalez
  • Cilic v. Del Potro (who is making a habit out of silly drawn out matches this week)
  • Kuznetsova v. Petrova (losing an asthonishing 1 game against Clijsters in the last round)
  • Nadal v. Karlovic (could be exciting or really boring)

And if any of you have an iPhone or iPod touch, I highly recommend the official Australian open app. It features live scoring, radio, option to submit questions to the presenters, maps and loads more. Fantastic app. Download it here.

Lookin' smart

Lookin' smart

After all the stress of the floods in Cork, I think it’s only fair that I get the week off to watch tennis at home :p (I wish) But the fun all starts today at the o2 arena where Andy Murray (never saw that one coming…) opens up in the singles against Juan Martin Del Potro. I’m only surprised he wasn’t first on court before the doubles….

Order of play:

  • Nestor/Zimonjic v. Frystenberg/Matkowski
  • Murray v Del Potro 2.15
  • Bhuphati/Knowles v Cermak/Mertinak 7.00
  • Federer v Verdasco 8.45

Obviously any match that features Federer would be considered match of the day, but I cant see him having any problems.

Murray and Del Potro however….I don’t think anybody would argue that it could very easily turn into a 3 set dog fight. I’d expect nothing more.

Heres to a good week of tennis!

And the London draw is out!

The end of a frustrating era

Marat :)

Marat :)

Two big stars will have left the game come this weekend. Two time grand slam winner Marat Safin, aged only 29 will play his last tournament this week in Paris. It will mark the end to a frustrating career for the Russian whom has notoriously underachieved on the tennis court. A brilliant player with immense talent, especially on the backhand side, was the subject of a special presentation today on the center court of the Paris masters after his 2nd round loss to Juan Martin Del Potro.

“Today I will put all my memories, all my wins and losses in a small box” said Safin, being optomistic about his future and hopes to stay somewhere in the tennis world.

Even though Safin didn’t make the most of his talents, he still achieved the kind of things most of the players on the tour can only dream of.

  • Reached world number one
  • Won the US Open, beating Sampras in the final
  • Famously beat Federer in the 2005 Australian Open semi-final and went on to take the title.
  • Holder of 5 Masters series titles
  • Winner of 15 tour singles titles in total
  • Has wins over Federer, Nadal and Nalbandian.

Final score : 4-6 7-5 -4-6

It’s gonna be a U.S Open kinda night!

What a stadium

What a stadium

Probably my favourite tournament of the year starts later on today!

The U.S Open is without question, the most glamorous tournament of the year. Whats more chic than playing under the lights in the designer Nike outfits, carrying customised racket bags and having the New York skyline in the background? Nothing!

This could be a very historic tournament indeed with Federer going for a, pretty amazing, SIXTH title in a row here and I cant imagine may people betting against him winning the title.

Some really good matches in the opening round and some that everyone will be watching

  • Federer v. unheralded American , Devin Britton
  • Andy Murray v. Ernest Gulbis (the hugely under achieving Latvian)
  • Two more wasted talents face eachother in Patty Schnyder v. Lucie Safarova

The best first round match is by far going to be Nadal v Gasquet : Nadal is coming off the all to well documented knee problems hes being having, and Gasquet trying to return from his cocaine ban that was just plain weird…. Anybody predicting a 5-setter? I see it as either Nadal making a fool of Gasquet, or Gasquet regaining form and beating Nadal for the first time in his career in hard fought sets with many backhand to backhand rallies.

What else is going on with the tournament? Lots!

  • iPhone app
  • Very cool stuff in the shop
  • More rankings controversy. I’m sick of saying it. You still arent number 1 Serena, even if Dinara loses first round. It’s consistency that matters, fool.
  • US Open are wasting resources on trying to monitor and control player tweeting. Ridiculous.
  • Two Americans get to open the night schedule this year. Hardly fair considering Federer has double the US Open titles than they have combined.

Play starts at 11 am NY time or 4pm in Ireland. Check out the live scores on the top right of this site :)

Del Potro spoils Murrays Birthday. Federer,Nadal and Djokovic advance

Saturday, May 16th, 2009

Juan Martin Del Potro ruins Andy Murrays birtday celebrations by beating the defending chapion for the first time in his career. Murray seemed in control at the start but the Argentine overpowered him in the end.

Federer makes it 18 wins out of 20 meetings against Roddick (in 3 sets surprisingly).
It was business as usual for Nadal and Djokovic who take each other on in the first semi-final today at around 4pm Spanish time.

Looking forward to seeing Federer in the final. :) . Hes making some steady progression.

Federer looking very pleased with himself

Federer looking very pleased with himself

As day 4 in the glamorous Monte-Carlo country club comes to a close, all the top seeds are through with the exception of the number 6 seed Giles Simon of France who lost comfortably to German qualifier Andreas Beck.

Wednesday is undoubtedly all about Roger Federer as he returns to the court as a married man only 4 days after his wedding day.

I feel like I’ve been on a honeymoon for the last few years, so I don’t feel necessarily that I need to go somewhere to celebrate with her.

Hmmmmm.

Hopefully this is the kind of kick-start to the clay court season he needs. Federer faces Andreas Seppi of Italy, a potentially tricky first match.

Other matches to watch out for

  • Nadal v Chela
  • Recently resurgent Ivan Ljubicic v Del Potro
  • Karlovic v Davydenko (who hasn’t played in a while because of an ongoing ankle injury)

Live scores here.
