The Brisbane final was the one everybody wanted. Both former number 1’s and multiple grand slam winners and comeback queens battling in out in the final.
Nobody was disappointed in a final that featured everything and shows us what we were missing the last couple of years watching boring 18 year old “next big thing” baseliners.
But anyway…. There has been nothing overly shocking so far this year, no massive upsets or surprising scorelines. It’s kind of disappointing! Speaking of, what about the Nadal/Gasquet match? It didn’t turn out to be the thriller I wanted but it’s great to see Nadal playing with the enthusiasm hes known for, sliding for balls and all without his knees strapped. Good times.
Federer is of course through to the 3rd round winning his first two matches in straight sets. Hes playing well, just needs to cut out the breaks points hes faced and he should be cool for the title.
The only match I can see that’s remotely strange is Mauresmo losing to Wozniak. Actually just looking at another. Sania Mirza losing 6-0 6-0 to Flavia Pennetta! What’s that about like! Another wasted talent in the tennis world . Can’t help but think her poor results lately are the doing of the ridiculous Indian government accusing her of disrespecting her countries flag because she was photographed with her feet near one….. Fools. She has had trouble from Muslim fanatics about her sort skirts too. People have too much time on their hands….
Federers ability to start winning tournaments and keep it going is fairly astonishing. Since winning his first title of the year in Madrid hes won 26 of his last 27 matches, including two grand slams and two masters series titles. Federer is definitely back on top of his game.
His victories against Murray and Djokovic last week should aslo boost his confidence and make him the clear favourite to defend his US Open title at the end of the month. Its so weird to think that he could meet the ‘now number 3′ Nadal in the semi’s there.
Elena Dementieva is also playing some of the best tennis of her career. Beating Serena and Sharapova to take home the third title of the year. I really like her style of play and has to be considered one of the top 3 favourites for the US Open, having been a finalist there before.
I’ve been so bust the last couple of weeks studying and international badminting that I haven’t had enough time to write the usual stuff!
Here’s a recap of the interesting stuff from last week.
Federer lost to Tsonga in the quarters of the Canada masters
Murray won it overall and to make it worse also became world number 2
Nadal is number 3
Clijsters is playing amazingly. She beat Kuznetsova and Azarenka last week. Pretty good after a 2 year break!
Serena Williams continues to act like the bitch that she is giving Bammer no credit for beating her last week. Some things never change. At least she has time to lick Andy Roddicks hole some more on twitter.
Federer is going strong this week in Cincinnati. He beat Hewitt comfortably to reach the semi’s where he will face Andy Murray.
Kim Clijsters makes her official return to professional tennis today at the WTA Cincinnati tournament.
She plays Marion Bartoli of France who had a big win against Venus Williams a week ago. It’s hard to know what to really expect but I’m sure everyone will be watching this one!
It won’t be shown on Eurosport unfortunately (what a fucking surprise…). They only like to cover boring matches in small tournaments most of the year.
