Roger makes history, but Roddick made it unbelievable

Sunday, July 5th, 2009

Roger Federer won his 15th grand slam title to make him the most successful man in grand slam history and will regain the number 1 ranking on Monday. An epic battle that lasted over 4 hours with a final score of 5-7 7-6 7-6 3-6 16-14. A real match that ended on a Roddick error but the final set could have gone either way.

Alot of credit has to go to Roddick, he came out and played his best and really fought hard and if he didn’t miss that volley on set point in the second set, who knows? It was a great two weeks for Roddick and I’m sure he will gain alot of confidence.

Something disappointing though at the presentation when Federer showed off a jacket with “15″ on the back of it which he put on when he lifted the trophy. Very arrogant I (and many others too I’m sure) think.

Wimbledon Final!

Federer

Federer

Federer v. Roddick

A very exciting match today. Federer takes on Andy Roddick who he beat in the final here twice before. Roddick is playing very well lately and Federer is playing pretty amazingly it has to be said.

The head to head record is phenomenally top heavy in favour of Federer

  • Federer leads the series 18-2. Extremely impressive.
  • They played 3 times on grass, all at Wimbledon, Federer won them all.
  • Roddick beat Federer once in the last 6 years.
  • Federer never lost to Roddick in a grand slam
  • This list goes on and on..
  • The odd’s are truly against the America.
  • Federer is chasing a record 15th grand slam title which will make him the man with the most major singles titles in history.

Pete Sampras said he also may attend the final so the pressure will be on with some of the all time greats looking on.

Play starts at 2pm.

Enjoy watching history being made :)

Poor Venus couldn’t make it three in a row

Venus Rosewater Dish

Venus Rosewater Dish

As you probably realise by now, I am not a fan of the Williams sisters at all, especially Serena. I was watching the final today with the hope that Venus would win it, or better yet, come back from match point down to truly devastate Serena but it just wasn’t too be. :( Anyone who watched the matched today would have been disappointed. Hardley any rallies of note and not a singles sliced ground-stroke. Very disappointing.

I suppose the only consolation is that the trophy/plate “thing” the Womens singles winner gets is called the “Venus Rosewater Dish” so I can relax knowing that Serenas victory will ALWAYS remind her of her sister anytime she thinks of her title. :)

Roddick v Federer Sunday :D

Friday, July 3rd, 2009
He deserved it

He deserved it

Yep its true, Roddick beat Murray today in 4 sets and played some of the best tennis he’s ever played, judging by the highlights. He played a very smart match and came out with a great game play to beat Murray. He serve and volleyed loadssss of time and was just really consistent. Well done Roddick.

Federer obviously won against Haas too. It wasn’t the most exciting of matches with both players holding serve fairly routinely until Federer could break Haas in the 2nd and 3rd sets for a fairly comfortable straight sets victory.

A quote I made in an earlier post before Wimbledon started a few weeks ago held up pretty well :p

The British public fooling themselves into thinking that they will have a British winner.

And I suppose I should mention the bitches Williams sisters since I “forgot” to yesterday. They both wo their semi-finals for an overrated final against each other tomorrow(match-fixing, anyone). Fantastic… Oh, and center court was so empty during the women’s matches yesterday, it was bordering on a joke!

Wow….Womens semi-finals day

Safina

Safina

The Williams sisters are the bookies favourites to go through to the finals. I dont think so though. I really like Dementievas game and Safina is playing alot better than she thinks. I really think the Williams sisters games are overrated. It is all in their reputation. Its their reputation that wins matches these days I think.

Dinara Safina really has the game to beat Venus tomorrow. I just hope she does choke under the pressure. Dementieva also has the game to beat Serena. Serena plays like a man, and her grunting is that of a beast, it is actually ridiculous, there are far more talented and graceful players than her coming up.

Tommy Haas is definetly the story of the tournament

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009
Mr. Roddick

Mr. Roddick

Haas who suffered many injuries and whom was surely destined for great things when he was world number 2 and rising when his parents were almost killed in a car accident in 2002. Haas took the year off to take care of him and never reached such heights in the ranking again, well, not yet anyway!

Haas is the 24th seed but never reached a semifinal here before. His solid all court game and amazing backhand took him through the tournament so far and I really hope he gives Federer a good match, although I think beating him is just a step too far.

Juan Carlos Ferrero was sadly beaten by Murray today.

Roddick and Hewitt played a 5 set epic with Hewitt showing the fighting qualities that took him to world number one but he just couldn’t get the better of Roddick today.

The semi-final lineup:

  • Federer v. Haas
  • Roddick v. Murray

Federer takes on Karlovic

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

Roger Federer is taking on Ivo Karlovic today. I’m expecting a tough match but Federer will be the survivor at the end. Well done to Karlovic though, its his first major quarterfinal. Fedrrer leads the series 8-1.

Tommy Haas is on court later. He’s playing gret the last month or so and it’s a real chance for him against Djokovic.

Later also:
Roddick v. Hewitt
Murray v. Ferrero

Todays line up

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009
Sabine Lisicki

Sabine Lisicki

Mostly womens tennis on court all around today. It’s Ladies quarterfinals day, the excitement…..

Some of the better ones will probably be

  • Safina v Sabine Lisicki and
  • Serena v Azarenka

Francesca Schiavone is very surprisingly in the quarterfinals too. The Italian is a big match player who led Italy to Fed Cup victory and was just one spot away from a a top-10 ranking a couple of years ago. She plays Dementieva later today so who knows what could happen. It’s a great opportunity for both women.

The idiots at BBC didnt show us the roof closing for the first time ever…

Monday, June 29th, 2009

Wimbleldon!

Wimbleldon!

History was made at Wimbledon when the roof on centre court was closed for the first time and BBC, the main Wimbledon broadcaster for a very long time, decided it would be better to show them putting the covers on court 2 instead and stayed on that shot for several minutes, and then showed a short clip of the roofs construction. Nobody wanted to see that. Complete fools.

Amelie Mauresmo and Dinara Safina were the lucky players to be involved in the historic moment.

The crowd cheered as the roof finished closing and it’s sure to be one of the defining moments that brings Wimbledon into the 21st century. It’s truly a stunning structure.

Check out the video of it closing here!

Ice-packs the order of the day?

Monday, June 29th, 2009
The roof closing

The roof closing

Wimbledon has seen practically no rain this year and its kind of disappointing. Everyone wanted to see the roof closed and in use on center court. But with temperatures like the ones we would see at the Australian open, many players have ice packs around their necks at change of ends. Could the roof be used today if play just gets too hot? After all these years of playing being stopped because of rain, surely it would be the ultimate irony!
