The man of the moment

The man of the moment

First of all, sorry for the lack of updates but there has been alot of stuff going on at college and I just didn’t have the time to blog.  :( . This time I am really back for good!

I’m sure everyone already knows the unfortunate news. Federer couldn’t make it six in a row and lost his title to Juan Martin Del Potro. Well done to him though, his forehand was pretty amazing through the whole match. Did anybody else notice Roger is getting more and more ’saucy’ later in his career? By saucy I mean he’s getting irritated more easily and not at his very best behaved. His couple of arguments with the umpire about line calls were not impressive and I didn’t like it :( Nevertheless , Mister Del Potro walks away with his first grand slam title and it really leaves questions for Andy Murray. Andy was well ahead of the Argentine and was second favourite to lift the title. The point I keep making that Andy isn’t good enough is yet again possibly proved. I don’t think he has a slam title in him.

I still feel that Kim Clijsters isn’t getting enough credit for lifting the title at the Open. She is a mother who has been off the tour for the two years, she came back, didn’t even had a ranking when she entered this tournament and she now leaves as the world number 19. Truly amazing. It’s been overshadowed by Serena Williams and her neanderthal antics. In case any of you have been living in Kerry ( :p ) since last week, here’s a reminder of what happened…

Federer v Hewitt

Hewitt

Hewitt

My pick of the third round.

Federer has won the last 13 matches in a row but I’m sure Lleyton can pull it off……lol

Nowadays it just looks like Hewitt doesn’t have the power to match the big hitters on the tour and it’s probably why he has struggled against Federer in recent years.

Still, shouuld be a good test for Federer.:)

Slicing a backhand

Slicing a backhand

I think it’s really annoying!

But anyway…. There has been nothing overly shocking so far this year, no massive upsets or surprising scorelines. It’s kind of disappointing! Speaking of, what about the Nadal/Gasquet match? It didn’t turn out to be the thriller I wanted but it’s great to see Nadal playing with the enthusiasm hes known for, sliding for balls and all without his knees strapped. Good times.

Federer is of course through to the 3rd round winning his first two matches in straight sets. Hes playing well, just needs to cut out the breaks points hes faced and he should be cool for the title.

The only match I can see that’s remotely strange is Mauresmo losing to Wozniak. Actually just looking at another. Sania Mirza losing 6-0 6-0 to Flavia Pennetta! What’s that about like! Another wasted talent in the tennis world :( . Can’t help but think her poor results lately are the doing of the ridiculous Indian government accusing her of disrespecting her countries flag because she was photographed with her feet near one….. Fools. She has had trouble from Muslim fanatics about her sort skirts too. People have too much time on their hands….

Matches to watch out for today:

  • Nothing too special unfortunately
  • Maybe Dementieva v Oudin
  • Roddick v Giquel
  • Haas v Kendrick

It’s gonna be a U.S Open kinda night!

What a stadium

What a stadium

Probably my favourite tournament of the year starts later on today!

The U.S Open is without question, the most glamorous tournament of the year. Whats more chic than playing under the lights in the designer Nike outfits, carrying customised racket bags and having the New York skyline in the background? Nothing!

This could be a very historic tournament indeed with Federer going for a, pretty amazing, SIXTH title in a row here and I cant imagine may people betting against him winning the title.

Some really good matches in the opening round and some that everyone will be watching

  • Federer v. unheralded American , Devin Britton
  • Andy Murray v. Ernest Gulbis (the hugely under achieving Latvian)
  • Two more wasted talents face eachother in Patty Schnyder v. Lucie Safarova

The best first round match is by far going to be Nadal v Gasquet : Nadal is coming off the all to well documented knee problems hes being having, and Gasquet trying to return from his cocaine ban that was just plain weird…. Anybody predicting a 5-setter? I see it as either Nadal making a fool of Gasquet, or Gasquet regaining form and beating Nadal for the first time in his career in hard fought sets with many backhand to backhand rallies.

What else is going on with the tournament? Lots!

  • iPhone app
  • Very cool stuff in the shop
  • More rankings controversy. I’m sick of saying it. You still arent number 1 Serena, even if Dinara loses first round. It’s consistency that matters, fool.
  • US Open are wasting resources on trying to monitor and control player tweeting. Ridiculous.
  • Two Americans get to open the night schedule this year. Hardly fair considering Federer has double the US Open titles than they have combined.

Play starts at 11 am NY time or 4pm in Ireland. Check out the live scores on the top right of this site :)

Can Roger make it 6 in a row at the US Open?

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009
Match point :)

Match point :)

Even the most biased tennis fan would find it difficult to argue with the achievements of Roger Federer this year. Two grand slams and three masters series over the space of six tournaments. It’s hard to imagine how he can do it, but he does, somehow. Of course there is always some who will doubt and insist he isn’t the best of all time, even if they know deep down that he is.

Roger has won the last 5 titles in a row at the US Open. It’s truly phenomenal. There is several people who are more than capable of lifting the trophy in Flushing Meadows, but who can get over the mental barrier that is the genius of Roger Federer? Andy Murray looked great last year and was playing great tennis until he saw “R. Federer v A. Murray” on the scoreboard on finals Sunday. He crumbled under the pressure. I personally don’t like Murrays style of play or his on court demeanor but he has done so well on the tour and is probably the most likely finalist in the second half of the draw in New York.

The final I predict is “style, class and effortless talent” v.”typical British, rude and overly cocky”.

Things are a little bit different this year, though. Roger is the proud father of twin girls, but you would honestly swear nothing has changed, or if anything, he has played better. His forehand in particular is looking amazing. He is playing like the Federer of two or three years ago. Murray is also showing us some great tennis, taking home a couple of masters series himself already this year and showing us he may be worthy of having the biography that was released all too soon.

Even though the US Open didn’t start yet, the final is shaping up to be a 5 set thriller.

And we wouldn’t want it any other way.
