Taking the title

Taking the title

A fairly disappointing week in Monte-Carlo I think. With Federer losing early, it was only ever going to be routine for Nadal to take the title, beating Djokovic 6-3 2-6 6-1. Credit to Djokovic for taking a set and playing the best I’ve seen him play this season. He played very aggressive but just wasn’t able to keep it up in the end.

Nadal was ok well this week with a few errors here and there but it looks like its going to be another stellar clay court season unless Mr. Federer can come up with something special over the next month (which I think he will) because there really is nobody on a clay court that can get close to either of them when they are playing near their best.

Looking forward to Mondays rankings, Murray should only be about 110 points behind Djokovic and with the Djoker defending a title in Rome, it looks almost inevitable that Murray will take over as number 3.:(

Nestor/Zimonjic beat the Bryans by a comfortable 6-4 6-1 scoreline.

Federer a shadow of his former self at the moment

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

Ok so Federer lost his 3rd round match against compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka. Its not surprising and is perhaps a bit of a relief for Federer who probably should have took the week off for his honeymoon anyway.
Hopefully he can enjoy the rest of his week off and have a proper well deserved break with his wife. I still expect great wins for him this season.

Final score line 6-4 7-5

Maybe its Karma for not inviting Stan to his wedding! :p

Rolex Masters day 5

Federer looking very pleased with himself

Federer looking very pleased with himself

As day 4 in the glamorous Monte-Carlo country club comes to a close, all the top seeds are through with the exception of the number 6 seed Giles Simon of France who lost comfortably to German qualifier Andreas Beck.

Wednesday is undoubtedly all about Roger Federer as he returns to the court as a married man only 4 days after his wedding day.

I feel like I’ve been on a honeymoon for the last few years, so I don’t feel necessarily that I need to go somewhere to celebrate with her.

Hmmmmm.

Hopefully this is the kind of kick-start to the clay court season he needs. Federer faces Andreas Seppi of Italy, a potentially tricky first match.

Other matches to watch out for

  • Nadal v Chela
  • Recently resurgent Ivan Ljubicic v Del Potro
  • Karlovic v Davydenko (who hasn’t played in a while because of an ongoing ankle injury)

Live scores here.

Monte Carlo Rolex Masters!

Sunday, April 12th, 2009
Fantastic view of centre courth

Fantastic view of centre courth

One of my favourites tournaments of the year, the Rolex Masters at the prestigious Monte Carlo Country Club is one of the most glamorous events of the year. Where spectators are all up their own arses and you feel out of place if you arent wearing a pair of D&G sunglasses that shimmer in the Monaco sunglight. It really is tennis at its finest. Already home to alot of top players (tax haven…), many consider it their home tournament.

Federer famously came within two points of losing to a nobody ranked outside the top 100 here last year.

Nadal is the 4 time defending champion, having beaten Federer in the final the last 3 years.

The crowd love Federer, not Nadal.

Murray is in Nadals half of the draw.

All top ten players in the draw except for Roddick (as usual….)

Live Scores here.

My prediction: Federer surprises most and takes the title as a very exclusive wedding present. The Bryan Brothers continue stellar year and take doubles.

Federer to play Monte-Carlo, aww yehhhhhh!

Friday, April 10th, 2009

Roger Federer announced today that he has changed his mind about skipping the glamorous clay-court event and has accepted a wildcard into the draw :D

I’m guessing it has something to do with his performance at Miami last week but I’m really hopeful! I think at the moment him and Nadal are by far miles ahead of everyone else on clay. There’s just something very special about seeing Roger play on clay.
