Federer has been named ITF world champion for the 5th time in his career. He had an incredible year and is very fitting for the award.
Serena Williams on the other hand…. She won the same award on the womens side and it’s hard to justify it. Yes, she is currently number 1 in the rankings but her infamous U.S Open outburst should have discounted it her for any such honour. What a great system.
He did it. Mr. Federer took the year number 1 ranking and with it became only the second player in history to lose and then eventually regain the year end number one ranking. After beating Andy Murray, it guaranteed that there was no possible way for Nadal to achieve more ranking points by the end of the tournament.
Spent a record 237 consecutive weeks at number 1
On a streak of 21 consecutive weeks currently
Will likely finish the year with over $7 million just in prize money….
Even the most biased tennis fan would find it difficult to argue with the achievements of Roger Federer this year. Two grand slams and three masters series over the space of six tournaments. It’s hard to imagine how he can do it, but he does, somehow. Of course there is always some who will doubt and insist he isn’t the best of all time, even if they know deep down that he is.
Roger has won the last 5 titles in a row at the US Open. It’s truly phenomenal. There is several people who are more than capable of lifting the trophy in Flushing Meadows, but who can get over the mental barrier that is the genius of Roger Federer? Andy Murray looked great last year and was playing great tennis until he saw “R. Federer v A. Murray” on the scoreboard on finals Sunday. He crumbled under the pressure. I personally don’t like Murrays style of play or his on court demeanor but he has done so well on the tour and is probably the most likely finalist in the second half of the draw in New York.
The final I predict is “style, class and effortless talent” v.”typical British, rude and overly cocky”.
Things are a little bit different this year, though. Roger is the proud father of twin girls, but you would honestly swear nothing has changed, or if anything, he has played better. His forehand in particular is looking amazing. He is playing like the Federer of two or three years ago. Murray is also showing us some great tennis, taking home a couple of masters series himself already this year and showing us he may be worthy of having the biography that was released all too soon.
Even though the US Open didn’t start yet, the final is shaping up to be a 5 set thriller.
On Federers official website today he announced that Mirka gave birth to twin girls last night in Switzerland. They even named them already, Charlene Riva and Myla Rose. Federer announced a few months ago that it was a baby boy they were having but….
Federer said “This is the greatest day of our lives. Mirka, Myla and Charlene are all healthy and doing very well.”
I can only imagine all the nice things them children are going to have!
Just a quick post on a quote from Federers interview today.
Federer recalled going to a stadium in Basel, Switzerland, as a kid in the late 1980s with his sister, and just standing outside to hear Jackson playing inside.
“There was such excitement that he would come,” Federer said after beating Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany. “Obviously I love his music. … A very sad moment, I think, in the music world. He touched many people. Same for me. But I’ll obviously still listen to his music for many more years to come.”
In honour of his brilliance and French Open victory on Sunday, the city of Basel will rename its international tennis venue “Roger Federer Arena” when they complete renovations later this year.
Federer is the 3-time defending champion. It’s gonna be an akward tournament for the rest of the players there this year. :p
Federer outplayed Soderling the whole of that match, showing us his best shots and the kind of form that took him to 13 previous grand slam titles.
Federer has to put up with a man who ran onto the court at one stage with a Barcelona football flag wrapped around him and tried to put a red hat on Federer. Security were slow to react but he was tackled to the ground by security and carried off the court by 3 security guards. The man was jailed for questioning and could be charged with illegally entering a sports stadium. AH YES!… Oh, he also claimed to be a Federer fan….
The key shots in his win were is first serve and forehand dropshot which brought him countless winners and took Soderling completly out of his comfort zone. Federer wasnt broken once and saved each breakpoint with sometimes amazing shots.
The Final score 6-1 7-6 6-4.
The trophy was presented to Federer by Andre Agassi, who won the title 10 years ago, also completing his career grand slam. Federer is now tied with Pete Sampras for the most mens singles grand slam titles with 14 titles. He will have a chance to beat that record in a couple of weeks on the lawns of Wimbledon.
I think this proves Federer really is the greatest of all time.
