Police seek stolen Jeep

Topeka police are seeking the public’s help to recover a stolen 1998 Jeep Cherokee.

The charcoal gray vehicle is a limited edition with five-spoke aluminum wheels, hood louvers and a luggage rack. It was reported taken May 28 from the 300 block of N.E. Oak Lane in Topeka.

The last four digits of its VIN are 6044, and it may have a tag reading 969 CJX.

Police ask anyone with information to call detectives at 368-9400.

The Cherokee is this week’s stolen vehicle spotlighted through the Hot Wheels program. The public can sign up for e-mail notifications about stolen vehicles online at topeka.org by checking “Hot Wheels” and “Hot List.”

Police advise that motorists take the following precautions to help prevent auto theft.

— Never leave the motor running when unattended.

— Don’t loan your car to a stranger or casual acquaintance.

— If you have a garage, use it and remove the key. Otherwise, park in a driveway instead of the street if possible.

— Steering wheel or steering-column collar locks are visible deterrents.

— Never leave a spare key in the vehicle.

— Don’t keep the title in the car.

— Keep valuables, such as cell phones, backpacks and CDs, out of sight.

Most travelers, if you asked for their advice, would tell you not to buy a backpack with wheels.  They might say that the wheels are an eyesore or that the wheels might get in the way when you are trying to put your pack in an overhead compartment.  A large number of people are worried that they will look silly having wheels on their backpack.  These arguments might have some validity, but a backpack on wheels can definitely come in handy while on your travels.

A main reason for purchasing a pack with wheels is to give you relief when walking long distances.  Carrying a heavy pack can really do a number on one’s back.  If the terrain is semi-flat, you can take off your backpack and start rolling it along with you to allow your body some rest.  Then, once your arms start feeling fatigued, you can stop rolling and put the backpack back on as you normally wear it and continue on.  With normal backpacks, you don’t have the luxury of giving your body a rest because you don’t have wheels on your pack to roll it.

Wheels really come in handy in the airport.  Airports, believe it or not, are where travelers do a huge amount of walking due to their large size.  I know I am glad I have a backpack with wheels after a long flight and I can just extend the handle of the pack and drag it behind me effortlessly.

Modern backpacks with wheels are a significant upgrade over the one’s of the past.  The grip handles are padded.  The wheels are soft and noiseless, meaning you won’t have crowds of people staring at you from the horrific sounds your pack used to make as it struggled along.  Most new backpacks with wheels also have adjustable handles, which lets people of vastly different sizes use the same backpack without any problems.  There are also side mesh pockets to hold water bottles or other beverages.  With these modern features, it is easy to see why travelers would be tempted to buy a backpack with wheels.

A backpack with wheels is a great purchase for travelers who get fatigued easily.  The wheels honestly do not look as bad as people think.  They are hardly noticeable on your pack.  No one is going to be pointing at you, laughing, just because you have wheels on your backpack.  I recommend you at least look in to getting a backpack with wheels before your next trip.
