Indoor cats
At 9:30 every night Eileen Phillips feels a nudge against her leg. Tootie has arrived to remind her that it’s time to play shadow puppets. Phillips obliges and the little cat jumps into action chasing the phantom animals across the floor. That game no sooner ends then along comes Munchkin with a feather stick toy. She also wants to play. Phillips moves the stick back and forth and watches with pleasure as her smallest cat swats and chases the toy.
While many cats do enjoy being outside where they can hunt prey or explore their surroundings, it’s a myth that going outside is a requirement for feline happiness say experts at the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). Playing regularly with cats easily satisfies the stalking instinct, keeps them stimulated and provides the exercise they need to stay healthy and happy.
The Phillips family, who reside in Riverdale , share their home with eight cats – all rescues – and when the felines aren’t demanding quality time with human family members, they are entertaining one another, playing with toys or watching the birdfeeder from the cat tree located in front of the bay window in the kitchen.
"There are always some cats following me around the house, so I have cat trees in my sewing room and in my TV room," says Eileen Phillips, who is vice president of Bloomingdale Regional Animal Shelter Society (BASS), where she has been a cat volunteer for more than 10 years. "Our cats are not allowed to go outside and they are perfectly content. They do love to sit in the window when it is open but they have no desire to run out the door."
At BASS, adopters are discouraged from letting cats roam freely in the outdoors.
"In this area we have bears and we have heard of coyotes killing cats," says Phillips. "At the shelter we have seen cats who have been in the outdoors coming in with horrible injuries. We’ve had to have cats’ legs amputated, and they have come in with holes and abscesses from bite wounds…"
Some people, says Phillips, choose to provide door flaps that allow their cats access to fenced in enclosures. It’s critical, she added, that any cats exposed to the outdoors have current vaccinations and are protected against fleas and ticks.
At Morris Animal Inn, providing entertainment and stimulation for feline residents is a top priority. During Pampered Pet sessions, cats receive quiet lap and brushing time, toy chasing sessions, story time and prime viewing of pink parrot fish as they swim around a large tank in the cattery. In the Kitty Play Room, cats have access to climbing and scratching posts designed to look like forest trees, a skylight for outside views and built-in furniture with nooks and crannies for sleeping or hiding. The Inn has a "Kitty SUV" (special cat stroller) on standby for cats who enjoy a stroll around the grounds.
