Almost tax free
The State of Louisiana is encouraging residents to get prepared early for the 2011 hurricane season that officially begins June 1.
Since 2007, the state has suspended collection of the four percent state sales tax during the annual Louisiana Hurricane Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday that takes place this weekend, May 28-29. During these two days, specified emergency supplies are exempt from the state portion of sales taxes. Local sales taxes are collected on those purchases.
During the two-day annual holiday, the first $1,500 of the sales price is exempt from state sales taxes on a wide variety of items, including:
Portable self-powered light source; portable self-powered radio, two-way radio, or weather band radio; tarpaulin or other flexible waterproof sheeting; ground anchor systems or tie-down kits; gas or diesel fuel tanks; packages of AAA-cell, AA-cell, C-cell, D-cell, 6-volt or 9-volt batteries, excluding automobile and boat batteries; cellular phone batteries and any cellular phone chargers; non-electric food storage coolers (ice chests) ; portable electric generators used to provide light or communications or preserve food in the event of a power outage; any “storm shutter device;” carbon monoxide detectors; and blue ice products.
Ron Carter of the Morehouse Parish Sales and Use Tax Commission said he does not think this will affect Morehouse very much. However, he did say that this would be a good time to buy a generator -- saving four percent will always help.
Robert Hebren of Tractor Supply Company has had a customer ask about the state tax-free weekend. He said the customer asked specifically about generators.
And even though this area is not threatened by hurricanes, Sheriff Mike Tubbs said there are other occasions where the exempt items might come in handy.
“We had the storm come through a few weeks ago that knocked down trees and power lines,” Tubbs said. “You can use the items available this weekend for situations like that.
