Dubai spurs Dhs32.4bn total automotive aftermarket trade in 2010

The UAE is making great strides as the driving force behind the burgeoning automotive aftermarket in the wider Middle East region. This was borne out by the latest trade statistics revealed by Dubai Customs yesterday, that indicated a healthy upward surge in imports and re-exports through Dubai.

The trade numbers were unveiled at the Automechanika Academy, part of the largest international auto-motive aftermarket trade fair in the wider region, Automechanika Middle East 2011, currently ongoing at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre.

According to Ms. Nassim Saeed Al Mehairi, Senior Manager – Statistics Section, Strategy & Corporate Excellence Department, Dubai Customs, the value of total trade in the automotive aftermarket, which includes imports, exports and re-exports, has grown to Dhs8,478m for the first Quarter 2011, as compared with Dhs5,320m in 2006 and Dhs7,653 in 2010.

This marks an 11% increase since last year indicating clear growth in the sector. A large part of this growth is attributed to the growth in vehicle ownership, the prevalence of a large number of vehicles in the region that need maintenance and upgrading and the growing realization of the benefits of regular servicing and replacement of parts and accessories in terms of reduced costs and increased efficiencies.

For the first quarter 2011 Japan and Germany feature as the top two importing countries within the sec-tor, while Germany, Iraq and Afghanistan are the leading export countries. Additionally, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Iraq have featured as the main re-export destinations, underlying Dubai’s prominence as a logistics hub and gateway to more difficult to reach markets.

The regional aftermarket is largely driven by imports and according to some of the latest statistics, Japan, China, Germany, South Korea and the US are amongs the leading source countries for spare parts, accessories, tyres & tubes and specialist equipment. Re-exports out of the  UAE to the wider region are headed mostly to Iran, Iraq, Russia, Finland and Pakistan.

The Automechanika Academy, which has been a popular feature of Automechanika Middle East, at-tracted a large number of entrepreneurs, businessmen and professionals engaged in the aftermarket sec-tor, who gathered to learn about the trends and developments that impact the industry both regionally and internationally. The day’s programme included presentations on the latest developments in tyre technology, smart repair and tuning technology – all topics of great interest regionally.
