According to MacLeod tradition, Leod, who is considered to be the founder of the MacLead clan (although little is know of him) had two sons—Tormod and Torquil. The tradition is that Tormod was the ancestor of the MacLeods of Harris, and Torquil was the ancestor of the MacLeods of Lewis.

Macleod of Lewis or in Scottish Gaelic ‘Clan Macleod of the Lewes’

From the 14th century up until the beginning of the 17th century there were two branches of Macleods: the Macleods of Dunvegan and Harris; and the Macleods of Lewis. There are two versions of the chief's heraldic motto: ‘I burn but am not consumed’ and ‘I shine, not burn’.

Those who are part of the clan, or associated families (septs) can choose from the following tartans: MacLeod of Lewis, MacLeod dress, MacLeod, MacLeod hunting or MacLeod of Raasay.

There are two main branches of the clan: the Macleods of Harris and Dunvegan, whose chief is Macleod of Macleod and the Macleods of Lewis, whose chief is Macleod of The Lewes. Both branches claim descent from Leòd, who lived in the 13th century.
