A man who fled from police and died in a fiery crash in Lexington early Sunday was out of jail on $50,000 cash bond in a drug trafficking case and was due back in court Friday.

Taher Yousef Kadah, 24, sped away in a Mercedes-Benz S500 from an attempted stop by a University of Kentucky police officer, according to a news release.

Lexington police said the car, apparently traveling at high speed, ran off the street, hit a tree and burst into flames at East High Street and Oldham Avenue, near the Woodland Park tennis courts.

On Monday, the Fayette County coroner's office identified the passenger killed in the crash as Basim M. Maali, 26. Maali was in the car when it burst into flames. Kadah was thrown from the vehicle.

Both men died from blunt-force trauma, the coroner's office said.

Police said drugs were a suspected factor in the crash.

Kadah's sister, Sjoud Kadah, said he was a 2004 graduate of Henry Clay High School and owned the Six Brothers Market on West Sixth Street. She said Maali operated a store nearby.

On Monday night, dozens of people from the neighborhood around Kadah's store gathered with candles to remember the man they knew as "Ted."

They recalled how he flirted with women, gave people what they needed even when they didn't have the money to pay and loved to talk trash.
