. It lacks any spark. The band's gone from primary colours to painting in one drab grey tone. This is the sort of aural wallpaper you'd hang in a beige outhouse. This is back to the days of one channel on the TV; it's an insult to the shoe-gazer sound that it almost apes - because it lacks the sparkle, the chime, the layers. It doesn't even drone with feeling!My issue with Skying is that it is a thin, bland album that sounds laboured rather than layered. It also exposes a band that had previously seemed clever in never quite sounding like any one band as being incapable of sounding like itself; incapable of offering anything of value.
Skying is receiving some rave reviews - from people keen to play spot-the-reference (I'll give you a clue: picture Primal Scream without the colourful characters, tunes or energy). And it's also being heralded as some great new sound. It's not. It's extraordinarily close to lifeless, a plodder of an album that ambles along, barely in 2D, the drummer playing the same groove at the same tempo, the songs almost indistinguishable.
Previously The Horrors had been one of many new bands to riff/rip on the Joy Division sound but even that's gone now; no longer du jour, it would seem.
Most cruel is the fact that Skying is an insult to hype . That's right. Hype is almost always just hot-air after all - but this exposes advance album-hype as just something that happens as the result of throwing a dart at a board with a bunch of band-names pinned to it. This suggests there's little left to actually hype.
The Horrors have changed their sound across three albums; to some it's a subtle shift, to some it's completely jarring. To me it exposes these musicians as a ctor -types; people playing a role rather than playing an instrument. They are in fact singing an act rather than singing a song.

And much as I was quite taken with Primary Colours, it was only ever surface level. I liked what I heard at the time - I don't regret that, nor do I regret putting my name to it.

To extend the logic, when we (mostly people of Indian origin in this group, I would assume) immigrate to the US, while we may try to conserve our heritage in private, we cannot impose it on the locals.
