FORUM: Racism still happens, even in Palm Desert
I knew that moving to Palm Desert was going to literally make my family a minority, especially for my kids in school. But I was not prepared for the discrimination and stereotyping that came with it.
I can't believe that even in this day and age, it is still going on. Really? With all the other stuff we could be battling over, people are still going to gripe over the color of someone’s skin or cultural background?
It's funny, because I experience discrimination all the time. But within my own race. It strikes me odd that I can be discriminated against by Hispanics because I'm not dark enough, I don't speak only Spanish, or I'm too "educated.”
Walking into a Cardenas or a carneceria, its almost a given that I will be discriminated against. I'll get the evil stares, the comments from people that think I don't speak the language, and the plain rudeness from cashiers that won't even greet me or tell me to have a nice day. Heck, sometimes I have to read the total myself because they won't even tell me that.
Which leads me to the discrimination at school. It is no secret that high school and college is highlighted white students. And my children look very Hispanic. Dark-skinned Hispanic real names, and the whole nine yards.
My son tells me almost every day he made a comment about his citizenship by students and teachers. A substitute, even asked if he was "not a Speaky" (meaning if he spoke English). And just because of his name, that made me laugh, because my children can not speak Spanish for their lives. I just tell them not to feed stereotypes and rise above the comments and discrimination.
Have you or your children experienced any form of discrimination? Do you teach your child about no color lines and equality? What do you tell them regarding racism and discrimination?
Yes - discrimination is alive and well here. I have light olive skin and brown eyes. I am adopted, so I am not clear exactly what my ethnicity is. However, a large majority of people here automatically assume I am Mexican. I like language, and I have tried to learn Spanish, French, German & even Italian. However, the Spanish is most useful here and easiest to recall ... thus fueling the discrimination from many English-only speaking people. Sorry, I try to speak Spanish when I think it is polite or otherwise useful. I have reason to believe that I have even been investigated (civil rights violated) by having my phone tapped and more because of my appearance. It is one thing for individuals to have a personal opinion, it is quite another to have civil rights violated because of how I look. My maiden name, and also my married name are English. Good luck in trying to shield your children.
