Senior Chaplain at Trinity School of Midland-Odessa, West Texas Posted: 4/4/2011 Location: Midland, TX URL: http://www.trinitymidland.org Salary/Range: Competitive Hours: Full Time Description:
Trinity School of Midland-Odessa is searching for an experienced Episcopal priest or a currently-serving school chaplain of any Christian tradition to join us as the School’s full-time, Senior Chaplain. A talented and ambitious Board of Trustees has established that the Mission of Trinity School is to be a college preparatory community that provides a nurturing environment to enrich the mind, strengthen the body, enliven the soul, and inspire servant leadership. The school motto is taken directly from Matthew 7.7: “Seek and you will find.” This mission-driven, happy, and excellent scholastic family of 540 students and 108 faculty and staff requires a mature and outstanding spiritual leader who will supervise the active religious life of the PreK-12 School, serve as an important and vital member of the administrative and leadership team, and be instrumental to our desire to live into our mission to educate the whole person in the 21st century. The School was founded in 1958 by members and friends of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Trinity, Midland, who wanted to provide children and youth with the same full-blooded, demanding, and Christian education most of them had received in some of the finest schools in America. While Trinity School is an ecumenical Christian school wholly independent of any ecclesiastical organization, and is accredited by the Independent Schools Association of the Southwest (an NAIS affiliate), our Daily Chapel discipline—which includes the Holy Eucharist each Wednesday—is pursued according to the Book of Common Prayer by permission of the Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Northwest Texas. The Headmaster and other staff clergy are under the spiritual jurisdiction of the Bishop, who licenses Chapel and Chaplain annually. The Bishop commends Trinity School for our commitment to both the Christian Faith and our tradition of sincere hospitality to families from different religious and ethnic backgrounds. The Senior Chaplain reports directly to the Head of School, sits on the Head’s Council, and will serve alongside the other faculty and staff who live and work in this delightful and economically vigorous region of West Texas, which is home to approximately 275,000 souls. The successful candidate will have a sincere love of people, especially children and youth, and will possess a deep desire to work in a scholastic environment. She or he will (1) be a strong Christian believer, (2) be an effective servant leader, (3) be able to appreciate religious pluralism and affirm the diverse religious commitments of the School’s constituents, (4) possess pastoral skills, (5) be an above-average preacher and public speaker, (6) be a confident president of public worship, (7) be a skilled administrator with practiced organizational skills, and (8) be a diligent and competent classroom teacher. The Senior Chaplain will have oversight of all Daily Chapel and religious programming in the School, work with other members of the staff to execute special and ceremonial events (e.g. Grandparents Day, Lessons & Carols, and Commencement), engage in first-level counseling, supervise other clergy chaplains or religious leaders working on the campus, serve as a student advisor, and work in the extra-curricular or co-curricular programs for which he or she is qualified. The next Senior Chaplain of Trinity School will (pending board approval) create a new Religious Studies Department and teach therein, and the successful candidate will have much to do with an all-new, four-year service learning program. The Senior Chaplain position at Trinity School is an outstanding opportunity for a highly motivated and gifted member of the clergy. The successful candidate will have the Master of Divinity degree (or its rough professional equivalent) and extra-curricular experience. Persons with a background in independent education (either professionally, as a former student, or as a parish priest serving in a school situation) are encouraged to apply, but any clergy with a strong sense of calling to school work are heartily invited to send credentials. Non-Episcopal clergy will get equal consideration in the process. The compensation arrangements are competitive. The new Chaplain will report for duty in July 2011. Interested persons should send a letter expressing sincere interest in the opportunity (and why), a current résumé with contact information, three completed letters of recommendation, and a list of five references (in addition to the recommenders) to the name and address below. Electronic mail is sufficient. The Rev’d W.L. Prehn, Ph.D, Headmaster Trinity School of Midland-Odessa 3500 West Wadley Avenue Midland, Texas 79707 (432) 697-3281, ext.
