NASCAR notes: Sponsor expects Patrick to go NASCAR

CONCORD — Bob Parsons, CEO and founder of GoDaddy.com, longtime sponsor of Danica Patrick, says he expects Patrick to move to NASCAR full-time next year.

Patrick denied an ESPN.com report earlier this week that stated she was headed to NASCAR full-time next year in the Nationwide series.

"She hasn't told me she will (go to NASCAR), but I believe she will and we'll be ready," Parsons said, according to an ESPN.com report. "Here's the fact: She loves (NASCAR), it's much more exciting than IndyCar, with all due respect, and the TV audience for NASCAR is off the hook.

"She came up to me right after she did her first NASCAR race. She said to me, 'I absolutely loved it. This is what I was born to do.' "

SHORTER EQUALS BETTER? As NASCAR has shortened the length of some races in recent years, the question becomes how many more races will be cut and if the sport's longest race, the Coca-Cola 600, should be shortened.

This season, the Phoenix spring Cup race was shortened by 100 kilometers (from 378 laps to 312 laps on the 1-mile oval) from last year. The Atlanta spring race, a 500-mile event, was replaced on the schedule this year by a 400-mile race at Kentucky. The 500-mile race at California last spring was replaced on the schedule by next weekend's 400-mile race at Kansas Speedway.

The Coca-Cola 600 typically takes more than four hours and some question if fans will sit through such a race.

Oak Ridge resident Kevin Harvick said that series officials need to alter some races but not the 600.

"I think this is a historic race in our sport," he said. "I think there needs to be less long races and I think the trend that you've seen with some of the races going to 400 miles, I think the race tracks and NASCAR have been working on doing that.

"This is the ultimate test of car, team, driver, engines, every part on the car. The sport is not all about just running a 250-mile race, it's about making your car last and making the cars last so people can develop parts and things to put on street cars, to put on shelves for aftermarket racing programs that sell parts. It's more than just having a fast car and lining them up and running a short race."
