“You don’t think of your teacher having a life outside of school,” said Jordan Nachtwey, 16, who recently ran into her Plantation High School teacher at a Mexican restaurant and at first tried to hide. “You just think they stay home.”
Covering her face with her hands didn’t work. Jordan’s Spanish teacher spotted her and came over to say hello.
“I guess it wasn’t too bad,” she said. “Just a little weird.”

For Adriana Grahm, seeing a student while she is working her second job at the Disney Store always makes her nervous.
“I try to keep where I work a secret from my students,” said Grahm, who teaches 10th grade English at a private school in Davie.
So when she saw a student walk into her store one day she slipped into the backroom and waited a half hour before the coast was clear.
“I kept checking to see if he was gone,” Grahm said.
South Plantation High School American History teacher Don Fields said he often sees his students walk by him while he is working behind the fine jewelry counter at Macy’s.
“I actually don’t mind seeing my students at all,” he said, adding they usually say hi.
They even recognize him, even though he’s in a suit rather than his school clothes, jeans and a polo shirt.
“They get to see me in a different way.”
At least they see him fully dressed.
When Richard Cantlupe, a social studies teacher at West Glades Middle School in Parkland, uses the swimming pool at his complex, he’s worried about running into the students who live there, too.
“I try not to talk about school outside of school,” said Cantlupe, who always greets his students. “It can be a little embarrassing when I’m lying by the pool with no shirt.”
But for some students and teachers, meeting up doesn’t have to be awkward.
