The invasion of the ash borers
Maybe you’ve seen a large purple square hanging from a tree as you drive north on the Route 611 bypass.
Maybe you thought it was a kite that got stuck.
It’s not.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture hung the purple box in the hopes that something — the emerald ash borer — will get stuck on it.
The emerald ash borer is a metallic wood-boring beetle from Southeast Asia. It was first found in the U.S. in Detroit in 2002 and has traveled across the country from there. The nearest sighting to Bucks County and Eastern Montgomery County was in the suburbs of Baltimore on June 6. None have been found in the immediate area.
“When the emerald ash borer comes to an area, it basically attacks and kills all species of ash trees and mortality is near total. So you’re looking at the loss of an entire genus of trees. That’s exactly what has happened everywhere this insect has been discovered,” said Sven-Erik Spichiger, entomology program manager for the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture.
“Ecologically speaking, you don’t ever want to lose not even a single species, much less an entire genus of trees.”
About 3 percent to 4 percent of all trees in Pennsylvania are ash trees. Spichiger said, “But that’s a bit misleading because we have entire counties where the percentage of ash is upwards of 80 percent. In (Bucks County), the percentage is as much as 20 percent. Bucks County has a fairly good component of ash in their wooded lots.”
Spichiger said many different organisms — birds, other insects, other plants — rely on the trees and could become extinct if the trees do, having a damaging ripple-effect on the local ecosystem.
Also, Spichiger said, “We have an industry that relies very heavily on ash trees. That’s the timber industry. Most of the ash trees the timber industry cuts down become Louisville Sluggers.”
The U.S. Department of Agriculture and the state Department of Agriculture have been hanging traps across the state, including locally, for several years. When officials find an emerald ash borer, they create a survey grid within 150 miles of the sighting and hang traps two miles apart.
The traps usually are purple or green boxes or funnels made of corrugated plastic. Spichiger said the plastic emits a wavelength of light that tricks the beetle into thinking the trap is an ash leaf. The department of agriculture also puts manuka oil, a cosmetic oil that has the same compound as ash bark, on the traps to attract the beetles.
