This week's column has news on Yellow Ostrich, Jeff Mangum, and Grizzly Bear's Chris Taylor. Also, ease into a blistering summer with a new summer jam. If that's not enough, I recommend several rock bands that are currently a part of the rock revivalist genre, and I give you my two best picks of this week's indie releases. And finally a throwdown between METAL bands Autopsy and Hours of Penance!
Got some feedback about my metal picks last week from two metalheads, who didn't like my picks. Apparently they weren't METAL enough. Can I use the word ‘metal' one more time? I don't really want to. Anyway, it was suggested that I try out a variety of heavier bands that I didn't list with my indie picks. Also, one person commented that my picks were some of the most streamlined acts in recent years. That could be true for hardcore metal fans. I don't read the various publications dedicated to the genre, but for most casual listeners, I'm sure they had never heard of the bands I listed. However, I was still willing to play ball with the recommendations from two listeners. So later in this column, I will take a look at the band Autopsy and Hour of Penance as this week's Throwdown. Barsuk seems to be picking up a lot of talent lately after signing Cymbals Eat Guitars as well. It will be interesting to see if Barsuk can strike it big with another band like they did with Death Cab For Cutie. Many people didn't get a chance to hear The Mistress because it was such a limited release. Be sure to check it out when it gets re-released on August 16th. I guess this makes Yellow Ostrich the official winner between the Throwdown war with Siskiyou. Jeff Mangum retreated to the unknown after his band, Neutral Milk Hotel, released what many consider to be the greatest indie record of all time In An Aeroplane, Over The Sea . That album served as inspiration to bands Franz Ferdinand and Arcade Fire . In fact, Arcade Fire's Funeral has often been cited as a reimagining of the Neutral Milk Hotel classic. NMH frontman Jeff Mangum disappointed many of the band's fans by never following up the classic album with a new release, but now he's back to touring again, playing songs from the NMH catalog. It was recently announced on the Merge Records website that Mangum has added more dates to his tour.
