Hip-hop artist coming to town with music, message

Having donated a kidney, Richelle Handling wanted to share her experience with others.

That’s why when Marc Anthony Porch, director of the Central Illinois chapter of Gift of Hope Organ and Tissue Donor Network, asked her if Jacksonville could be a stop during hip-hop artist Bone Crusher’s Campaign for Hope tour, she took the opportunity with only 14 days to plan.

Bone Crusher is a nationally known artist who gained attention in 2003 with his first solo album “AttenCHUN,” which featured the single “Never Scared.” He has appeared on Celebrity Fit Club and set a record for weight loss.

He will debut his new single “Unstoppable” at 7 tonight at Paradiso Sports Bar at 39 S. Central Park Plaza in Jacksonville.

Handling, a 20-year Jacksonville resident, said she wants to bring new things to Jacksonville.

“That’s people spending money here,” she said. “We have drive to Pop’s [Nightclub and Concert Venue in Sauget] to see bands.”

The fact that the campaign combined with Gift of Hope made it a perfect match. She hadn’t thought too much of organ donation until she volunteered to donate a kidney to a man who had had little success finding someone who was a good match.

“I think God maybe told me to,” Handling said. “I said, ‘I’ll do it.’”

Handling hadn’t even met the man in person, but went through the testing, which was difficult at first, as Handling had experienced some health issues. Finally, through Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Handling was able to donate a kidney. The hospital helped with the expenses for her to get to Chicago.

“Being a living donor is really special, because you can see the change you’ve made,” Handling said. “Even registering your name for being a donor, you make a change in several people’s lives.”

The day will start with a block party at Jefferson School at 733 N. Clay Ave. There will be three additional stops — one at Nichols Park pool at 3 p.m., the YMCA at 4 p.m. and the Community Park playground at 5 p.m.

The day will culminate with a listening party at 7 p.m. at Paradiso. DJ and MC Eddie Baldwin will kick the show off, followed by acts Dice, Nick, Jusie Marie and Mojo. The night will finish off with an open mic freestyle. Anyone wanting to participate in the open mic portion needs to register by the start of the show.

Hip-hop and festivals: an awkward relationship
Hip-hop and festivals: an awkward relationship

Both are synonymous with festivals, and few genres deliver these as well as hip-hop. Yet, often, when rap acts appear at festivals, all you get is bass and beats; it's almost as if the MCs needn't bother turning up. Failure to deliver live is a

Fresh Cut Collective loves the kids

The truth is, I don't think of us as a hip hop group. Every member in the band has a different musical background, and tastes even more diverse than the bands we've played in. What I love about hip hop is the freedom to combine any and every style of

Live hip-hop bands - Future Producers forums

Extremely better. I have been advocating this on here a lot lately. Ever since I got into metal and indie music I fell in love with live instrumentation and the band atmosphere. Hiphop needs this. I haven't been in one, but I'd love to. It brings a whole new level of musicality to this genre. Also, I think it would be easier to get gigs when you have a band because it's a more thorough music experience then a one man show. There is NOTHING like a great live performance and it gives more musicians jobs. We all want to be working musicians. Hiphop bands give another outlet for the keyboard player, brass player, guitarist, etc a venue. Lots of people you wouldn't expect to actually tour with a band. For example El-P for his last album, which was, as usual, very programmed. I like the life from that a song takes when its played live and its a bit different from how you hear it on the album. All I really want in life is that house in the countryside with a studio, have my friends over; good food, good women and make music. This really is a great idea that I haven't heard of too much. The thing is, like inverted was saying the songs would have to be written and produced with the live band in mind rather than tens of synth patches and heavily layered drums and percussion tracks. These kind of performances would be good where the band could play more album type records where all the songs have a general overall vibe or feel. All in all, I would love this though it would add a huge element to the music aspect of live performances with the obvious style and variations live musicians would bring to the table.

Chris Biersack I'm also really confused why hip hop artists literally "sample" real bands' music and that's OK, but,
