College students should not overlook coupons, deals

Chances are, this is not a question that your friend would normally text you, in fact, the phrase  "clipping coupons" may immediately take your mind to a nursing home filled with grandmothers. Recently though, I have realized it's not just a white-haired, elderly affair. In fact, college students might find coupons more valuable than any other population as many of us are financially crunched.

  Just as we've moved on from vinyls to mp3s, the coupon world has evolved, too. The classic medium for these money-saving rectangles is no longer just the Sunday newspaper. Sure, you can find plenty of great coupons there, but there is a whole new universe of bargains now.

There are numerous websites that are worth checking on a regular basis for wonderful deals including, but not limited to:  thekrazycouponlady.com,southernsavers.com and thefrugalgirls.com. Then of course, if you are looking for a specific product, you can always Google it and, more often than not, find some sort of sale. Not only that, but check the back of receipts from Kroger—there are goodies there, too! Also, rewards cards are all the rage now. Many stores offer free memberships that offer plenty of coupons or special codes (AC Moore, Borders, Speedway, Panera Bread, Office Depot, etc).  

Finally, the coupon industry is going green! There are many establishments that will give you a discount when you simply show your coupon on your smart phone. No cutting or paper necessary! 

Of course, just like any hobby, you can improve your skills beyond the basic level. This may seem silly in terms of coupons, after all, it isn't exactly like practicing a golf swing, but it can actually be an art. Buying ahead is a skill that can prove to be incredibly useful. Buying two items for the price of one even if both aren't needed at that time is one way to save money. Another tip is to organize. Buy a cheap organizer for a dollar or two and keep it handy. 

The only thing better than a great discount is a freebie, and these are in, too! "Hey, It's Free" features at least one free item each day on their twitter page (twitter.com/heyitsfree). Granted, some of these samples are small, but sometimes it is nice to get to test a product before buying it. Don't forget your Marshall ID for freebies or discounts, either. For example, with your ID and a purchase of at least $5, you get a free piece of pie from Jim's Steak and Spaghetti.

I want to buy a dress online and it’s like $ 50 but then shipping is going to be $ 10. The only thing I have been able to find is that you can get free shipping if you purchase $ 150 or more, but I just want the dress. Does anyone have a free shipping code or % off coupon, or know where I could find one? Will choose best answer, thanks in advance!

Answer by kaitlyn i don’t believe you can just go get codes. if you create an account and subscribe to their updates, urban sends out codes all the time! i get them everyday actually. but you can’t share codes because they design them for each person for this reason exactly, so the same code doesn’t get used multiple times by multiple people. sorry about that, but try creating an account, wait a few days, and check your e-mail, and you’ll most likely get a code!

My best advice would be to sign up for Urban Outfitter’s emails…they always come with coupons for special deals. Even their Twitter feed sometimes has information about special offers. Otherwise, I’d just call the store or go in and talk to someone. Any employee would be able to tell you about special promotions going on.

Better yet, acquaint yourself with an Urban, Free People, or Anthropologie worker…they get 40% off across all the company’s stores, including the online store. Maybe you could sweet-talk a friend into letting you use their discount?
