First Rabid Bat of Year for McHenry County Reported
The first rabid bat of the year was reported this past week in McHenry County.
The bat did not have any contact with a human and was found in Woodstock, according to the McHenry County Department of Health press release. McHenry County had the most rabid bats reported among Illinois counties in 2010 and several area counties have also already reported rabid bats this year, according to the MCDH.
MCDH encourages residents to take a "hands off" approach to wild animals and to educate their children on the dangers. Rabies is most common among bats, skunks, racoons and foxes but also can be found in deer, large rodents, woodchucks and can be passed along to cats, dogs and livestock if they are not vaccinated.
"A bat that is active by day, found in a place where bats are not usually seen (such as in your home, in a swimming pool or on the lawn) or is unable to fly, is more likely than others to be rabid," according to the MCDH press release.
The MCDH offers the following tips for dealing with a bat in a home that might have had contact with a human or domestic animal:
It is strongly recommended that it not be released but contained in a room, under a bucket or a blanket (using gloves as a barrier). In order to test bats for rabies, it is important they be in good condition (head is intact) – either alive or recently deceased.
