Go! What are you afraid of?

One of the weirdest pictures in the programme for the upcoming arts festival in Grahamstown shows three men in grinning monkey masks. Further back in the large book are fearsome cartoons showing a curious guy sticking out his forked tongue. Perhaps he is the devil? But the organisers have not gone mad; this is just some of the leavening in a varied and extraordinarily well-balanced programme.

The National Arts Festival opens its 37th year with a bang on June 30 and leaps, bounds, dances and thoughtfully cogitates its way through to July 10. The variety is immense. There is some outstanding drama in theatres around the little city, grand orchestral productions and dance in the vast, comfortable theatre in the heart of the hilltop Monument (now named after Guy Butler), and charming – also adventurous – classical productions by celebrated trios, duos and larger groups in more intimate venues.

The traditional Gala Concert, a must for the more trad regular festival patrons, is on with a lively programme in the Monument on the afternoon of the first Sunday, courtesy of the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic conducted by Richard Cock. There will be two soloists, pianist Ben Schoeman and soprano Magdalene Minnaar.

The orchestra will also open the festival with a symphony concert, starting with the Merry Wives of Windsor overture, followed by Jacques Offenbach’s Concerto Militaire with international celebrated cellist Jerome Pernoo. After the interval is the Brahms Symphony in D major. The conductor for the evening is Tibor Boganyi.

For dance fans the range is immense, from the super-classical Swan Lake with its glorious music by Tchaikovsky through adventurous contemporary work by leading local and international soloists and companies, including a group from Rajasthan, and astonishing performances by Pilar Cervera (“Fura”), a dancer from Spain who also takes to the air as a trained trapeze artist. She has won plaudits around Asia with her “fairy dance in the sky”.

The plays on the main programme could hardly be more varied: There are soldiers in old helmets who arouse questions in 2011 about the weight of history, a family dinner party with awkward moments, and a history master whose passion for his subject drives him over the top. Curiously Shakespeare keeps coming back. A group of students at a fancy school come across an “illicit” copy of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and start acting it out. The London Telegraph calls the result of the performance of Shakespeare’s R&J “something that has sexiness and daring right up there with West Side Story”.
