Teamwork pays off in stellar season for Otay Ranch
— What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas? Tell that to the Otay Ranch High School boys volleyball team.In April, the Mustangs found something special in the desert and brought it back.
Under Sun City’s flashing lights, surrounded by its superficial glitz and glamour, Otay Ranch genuinely clicked during a tournament, and it maintained that chemistry to become the San Diego Section Division I champion and finish Saturday as Southern California Regional runner-up.
The Mustangs’ historic run was defined by their cohesion.
At its worst to start the season, Otay Ranch (32-8) scuffled as a collection of players who happened to share the same court. The bench was quiet. The offense unbalanced.
A South County team with something to prove against the perennial powers in North County, the players pressed, and the collective chip on their shoulder expanded after losing the season’s second match to Poway in four games and then to Torrey Pines in four games on April 4.
It was now or never.
“We, as a coaching staff, called the kids out after that (Torrey Pines) match,” coach Tony Fajardo said. “We laid it on the line: ‘Here’s the opportunity you guys have. It’s a long season. You have to get back to it. We have Vegas coming up. It’s time to quit being individuals and being selfish, and work as a team.’”
Ten days later, the Mustangs arrived at the Las Vegas Easter Invitational Tournament. The players were separated from their closest friends on car rides and in hotel rooms, fostering their opportunity to mesh.
They ate together, went to a nearby shopping mall together.
When the time came, they played together with eight best-of-3 matches in two days.
Otay Ranch swept its opponent in the first seven, including formidable Clovis West and Grass Valley Nevada Union, before falling to Phoenix Brophy College Prep in the tournament’s semifinals.
“In Vegas, there was no selfishness,” said Jorge Reyes, 17, a junior opposite hitter. “There was no negativity. Everything was clicking, no matter who got the kill, who got the point. We were cheering for each other. Our bench was outstanding. If we made a mistake, we kept our heads up and just played for the next point. Everything was about having fun.”
Back in San Diego, the good times rolled.
Sophomore Jared Arias said the key on the court was spreading the ball around, as four different players finished the campaign with 200 kills or more.
