Dallas Schools Top Newsweek High School Rankings

'S Gold Medal list , high schools were ranked using a three-step process . Schools where students outperformed state averages on reading and math tests made it past the first step. Second, traditionally disadvantaged students' (black, Hispanic, and low income) performances on tests were compared to state averages for similar students.

Finally, U.S. News rankings give an unfair advantage to affluent schools.

He claims making the rankings methodology more complicated "takes the magazine further from, rather than closer to, its goal" of ranking high schools according to its "success turning out college ready (and life-ready) students."

By making graduation rates such an important part of the calculation, he says, schools in affluent neighborhoods have an inherent advantage. Few schools in poor neighborhoods have "found a way to escape the iron rule that poverty significantly lowers the chances of getting out of high school and into college," he writes. "The only sure-fire way for the hard-working staffs of those schools to improve their numbers is to expel the poor students and fill their spaces with rich ones, a strategy that is not only illegal but morally reprehensible."

The Washington Post's Citizen

All such "best high schools" rankings should always include two additional characteristics for each listed school. (1) A description of the academic standards for student admission to the school. (2) The percentage of students who qualify for free-or-reduced-lunch benefits under U.S. Department of Agriculture standards. It would be very surprising if any of the listed schools has random enrollment and a majority of its students living in poverty. Any school can succeed if it can decide who is allowed to enroll and who is not, Any school can succeed if nearly all of its students reside in affluent households.

Professor Emeritus

If schools and universities encouraged students to study what students find remarkable, interesting, and important, a student's cortex may more fully develop before age 22. Because students are so ensconced with the obedience to authority frame in schools and universities, major decisions and the brain power required to make them are not developed until they leave school. More is said about this in the book Re-opening Einstein's Thought: About What Can't Be Learned from Textbooks, Sense ublishers, 2008.

Delaware Opinion - A Girl's 'Bucket List' Goes Viral, Congress ...

Fifteen-year-old Alice Pyne of England started a personal blog on Monday, and in five days has gained 10,000 followers. Why all the attention? Well Alice has Hodgkin's lymphoma and devoted her blog to her bucket list, a compilation of things she hopes to do before she dies. Her list includes traveling to Kenya, swimming with sharks, and meeting her favorite musicians. Celebrities like singer Katy Perry tweeted about Pyne's wishes, helping make the hashtag #alicesbucketlist trend around the world. Pyne's new fans have helped turn her bucket list into reality, like meeting the British band Take That. But Pyne says she's happiest about rallying support for her No. 1 wish of making, "everyone sign up to be a bone marrow donor." To donate, you can go to www.marrow.org. Though two weeks have passed since New York Rep. Anthony Weiner's Twitter scandal broke, Yahoo searches for the embroiled congressman are still up. Check out this graphic representation of searches for "Weiner" on clues.yahoo.com. Tweets from Congress, however, have decreased. According to the website tweetcongress.com, 400 members of Congress tweeted more than 4,000 times in the week before Weiner tweeted a lewd photo of himself. The following week, that number plunged by about 1,000 tweets. Tweets from politicians overall are down almost 30 percent since Weinergate. It seems the negative effects of one accidental tweet may outweigh the benefits of Twitter as a new way for politicians to reach their constituents. Finally, the state of Alaska is releasing 24,000 pages of emails sent by Sarah Palin during her time as state governor. The emails were requested by journalists in 2008, but are just now being released because of the enormous volume of information. Major news outlets like the New York Times and the Washington Post are asking their readers for help. The Times has asked readers to submit newsworthy Palin emails through an online form. The Washington Post has gone one step further by looping in social media. Readers can join the conversation about interesting Palin emails through the Washington Post's new Twitter account @PalinEmails.
