Artists to paint historic Frederick, Md., during city's 1st 'plein air ...
FREDERICK, Md. — Frederick, Md., is hosting a competitive open-air painting festival this week with 30 professional artists taking to the streets to capture the city’s historic architecture and streetscapes.
The Easels in Frederick festival begins Wednesday and runs through Sunday in downtown Frederick. The Delaplaine Visual Arts Education Center plans to make it an annual event to promote “plein air” painting and the city’s arts scene.
The participating artists will submit two completed artworks on Saturday. They will be exhibited Sunday and offered for sale at a ticketed preview reception and later at a free public reception.
Visitors will be able to vote on their favorite painting, and the winner will receive a $1,500 People’s Choice Award. A total of $9,000 in cash prizes will be awarded.

The other aspect in this design that was difficult to decide on was how to keep the panel I would be painting on in place. I was considering fabricating my own hardware as I did with the side hinge until I came across Jim Serrett's site Pochade Box Paintings . In his post on How to build your own Pochade Box , where he goes into great detail (and I highly recommend reviewing this post) he show's how he used a small bungee cord through slots to hold the panel in place. I thought that was brilliant. It works great, it's inexpensive, lightweight and you can tie a quick knot in it for smaller panels. Many thanks to Jim Serrett. I have felt compelled to explore and create art from a very early age. Drawing, painting, art history and the study of traditional painting methods have been part of my life for as long as I can remember.
