Haughton Learning Center: where performance matches potential
In 1965, after graduating from California State University, Sacramento with a bachelor’s degree in education and a multiple-subject teaching credential, Elizabeth Haughton began her teaching career at Sutter Creek Primary.
While teaching first grade, Haughton found there were children who were struggling, but who had the ability and potential to do better. Haughton experienced her own struggle, which was to find a way to develop their potential — something she was certain they all possessed. In her words, she “could see it in their faces and in how hard they tried.”
In 1970, Haughton found out about Precision Teaching, at the University of Washington, in Seattle. She saw the results of a system that measured a student’s learning of any curriculum or teaching style. It was then she realized that they (Precision Teaching methods) were onto something, with a main component that, in her experience, was missing from mainstream, traditional classrooms: the direct, ongoing measurement of a student’s learning, not an average or standardized test.
After studying and becoming a trainer of the Precision Teaching method herself, Haughton taught others to use the PT method and design curriculums to meet individual needs. In the 1970s, after taking more university courses in learning theory, she became a Master Teacher of PT and began teaching students who had learning and emotional issues.
In 1989, after 24 years of teaching in the public school systems in Oregon, Washington and Canada, Haughton opened the Haughton Learning Center in Napa. Between that time and 2004, she trained and advised a staff of 15 tutor/teachers, who provided individual, one-on-one instruction to more than 1,800 students. Now, Haughton has come to Amador County and so has the Haughton Learning Center.
Ledger Dispatch: What is the Haughton Learning Center?
Elizabeth Haughton: The Haughton Learning Center is a private educational service whose purpose is to help children ages 3 to 18 attain their highest level of academic, social and personal skills. The center provides an environment where children develop a definite purpose, quality learning habits, a strong understanding of their strengths, and excitement about their own learning.
LD: What is the first step when people come to you for help?
EH: Prior to enrollment, academic learning priorities are established through individualized assessments where I measure auditory, language, visual processing and motor skills and challenges. The assessment measures and analyzes strengths and needs in terms of performance.
