Jeff Korbelik: Fran Drescher, Ally Walker back with new shows

Two new shows of note debut this week featuring veteran TV actresses. Fran Drescher stars in the new TVLand comedy "Happily Divorced," which begins its 10-episode run at 9 p.m. Wednesday on Time Warner Cable Channels 66 and 114.

Ally Walker, last seen taking a bullet on FX's "Sons of Anarchy," is on Lifetime (Channels 54 and 211) in "The Protector," which kicks off its 13-episode run at 9 p.m. Sunday.

Here are my quick takes on each:

"Happily Divorced" -- The nasally voiced Drescher takes a page from her real life in a comedy series she developed with her ex-husband Peter Marc Jacobson, who came out as gay after their 21-year marriage ended.

In "Happily Divorced," Drescher and gay hubby, played by John Michael Higgins, continue to live together after they divorce. The cast also includes Rita Moreno and Robert Walden as Drescher's parents.

It's mildly funny. The real draw here is seeing Drescher at work again. She is best known as "The Nanny," which ran on CBS from 1993 to 1999. She has a way of making the predictable humorous. That's not easy to do. Grade: B .

"The Protector" -- I've been a fan of Walker's since she starred in the NBC crime series "The Profiler."

Here, she plays a divorced mother who juggles her demanding professional life as a Los Angeles homicide detective with her just-as-demanding personal life.

The cast includes Chris Payne Gilbert as her troubled younger brother, who helps her with her two boys, and Tisha Campbell-Martin as her partner.

It's a procedural, so we'll get a crime of the week. What I found interesting was the relationship Walker's mother has with the sons, played by Thomas Robinson and Sage Ryan.

This is what gives the show heart and will keep viewers coming back week after week, especially Lifetime's target demographic of women. Grade: B .

Across the remote

* The biggest news this past week was the announcement that Laurence Fishburne is leaving "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation."

His contract was up, and the actor elected not to renew it.

That will mean big changes for the CBS crime procedural. It will need to replace Fishburne. Plus, Marg Helgenberger will have a reduced role next season.

* It's official: Former CBS News anchor Katie Couric will join ABC to host and produce her own nationally syndicated talk show and join the ABC news team.
