Scanner offers sharper image
Lewis County General Hospital, Lowville, has begun using a high-tech CT scanner that offers better images with lower radiation emissions and scan times.
And Canton-Potsdam Hospital, Potsdam, is set to unveil a similar machine by the end of the month.
"The quality of the image is going to be unsurpassed," Dr. G. Michael Maresca, president and founder of St. Lawrence Radiology Associates, said of the Siemens 64-slice CT scanner. "There is nothing in the market like it."
St. Lawrence Radiology, which has an administrative office in Watertown, is affiliated with 12 rural hospitals, including the ones in Lowville and Potsdam. The two facilities were able to obtain a discount by buying new scanners simultaneously, Dr. Maresca has said.
"We are here to serve the community, and, to do that, we need cutting-edge technology," Lewis County General CEO Eric R. Burch said in a statement.
The new CT scanners use 40 percent to 60 percent lower X-ray doses than earlier machines and are the first of their kind in the north country, Dr. Maresca said.
They will allow patients the benefit of more accurate, targeted scans — including biopsies — without having to go to a larger hospital outside the area, he said.
Lewis County General's new scanner is a "quantum jump" over its prior model, Dr. Maresca said. And, while Canton-Potsdam Hospital already has a 64-slice scanner, the new model will be an upgrade, particularly in reduction of radiation dosage, he said.
