Swamp Fox Quilters reap what they sew
Jim Fahey casts his ballot for the Swamp Fox Quilters 2011 Challenge Thursday at the Hartsville Museum. The quilts designed for the Challenge will be on display at the museum through August. Visit the museum to vote for the People’s Choice Award.HARTSVILLE_ The manly art of quilting is what Jim Fahey calls his newest hobby.
Fahey, from Florence, started quilting three years ago when his wife suggested he needed a project to occupy his time. He is one of two male members of the Swamp Fox Quilters Guild. He joins Edwin Valentin of Darlington who has been quilting for four and half years. Valentin learned to quilt so he could make heirloom quilts out of his three children’s baby clothes.
“We are an oddity,” said Fahey Thursday as the Swamp Fox Quilters Guild met at the Hartsville Museum for the opening of the Guild’s Annual Challenge exhibit. Each year the guild members are invited to participate in a challenge. A theme for the challenge is picked by a committee and the members have one year to create a quilt that embodies the chosen theme.
Valentin was presented a special First Time Entry award Thursday by Karen Kendo, president of the Quilters of South Carolina. The entry is named Isabella for his granddaughter who will receive the award-winning pink quilt trimmed in lace for her birthday in October.
“This is my first show,” said a very surprised Valentin upon receiving the award.
He said he has made quilts before but when it came time to enter he would chicken out.
“I was always afraid and would chicken out,” Valentin said.
He said others encouraged him and wouldn’t let him out of this one.
“They talked me in to it,” Valentin said.
Valentin was already crocheting when he decided to try quilting.
“I picked up a book and decided to try this,” he said.
Asked why he took up quilting, Fahey said, “My wife made me do it.” And now his she is quilting, too. Shirley Fahey is also a member of the guild.
Fahey had previously worked with stained glass and found the two very similar.
“It was an easy transition,” said Fahey who didn’t enter this year’s challenge but won an award for his entry last year.

Crazy Horse Quilting: A Disappearing Nine-Patch
Dorothy, Dort and more recently, Dory. Yes, three names. I was called Dort when I was little (much better than Dot) and now its morphed into Dory. That's the problem with a name like "Dorothy." What do you do with it?? I discovered quilting when a good friend offered to make me a quilt. From that moment, I was hooked. I began with piecing, then quilted on my DSM, then advanced to longarming on my Millennium and a business was born. Crazy Horse Quilting is named after the best horse in the world, Elly. Quilting and horses are my passions. And now that I've been lucky enough to quilt for others and have recovered well enough from two back surgeries to be able to ride endurance again, life couldn't be more perfect. Thanks for stopping by and I hope you enjoy my blog.
