Backbreaking work leads to summit of volcano
California Conservation Corps volunteers are doing the backbreaking work of constructing 20 switchbacks, 40 rock staircases, one climbing turn and 900 linear feet of retaining walls at Lassen Volcanic National Park this summer, as they join park trail crews in the second year of a five-year project to reconstruct and restore the 2.5-mile trail to the summit of Lassen Peak. With a $199,479 grant from the Federal Highway Administration''s Scenic Byways Program and additional support from the National Park Service and Lassen Park Foundation, the park's Reach The Peak project is a multi-year effort to rehabilitate one of the most popular trails in the national park system. Lassen Peak, one of the world's largest plug dome volcanoes at 10,457 feet in elevation, is a featured element of the Lassen Volcanic Scenic Byway, an All-American Road. "Climbing to the top of an active volcano is an exciting adventure that you can only do at a few locations on Earth," said Park Superintendent Darlene M. Koontz. "Lassen Volcanic National Park is one of them. The project will widen the trail, reconstruct retaining walls, install drainage structures, create turnouts and restore areas previously damaged by visitor foot traffic."We welcome reader feedback! Italians await the eruption of the volcano giant | World News ...
Several years ago, Italian scientists have discovered about 40 kilometers south of Sicily huge underwater volcano. Its base covers an area of 750 square kilometers, larger than the area of Rome. Height greater than the Eiffel Tower. And this is not the only underwater volcanic object: in the Mediterranean region are more than 20. A year ago, scientists began to warn that the eruption may begin at any time. Predict the eruption of the volcano is simpler than the earthquake, says the deputy director of the Institute of Earth Physics Eugene Rogozhkin. Devices for pointing this out quite accurately. "This is quite possibly the only question is – when. I think this is unlikely to happen tomorrow. Because from the beginning of seismic activity in the area of volcanic eruptions to the real place for a while – a month or more ", – says Rogozhkin. National Institute of Volcanology recorded several aftershocks in the region of Mount Etna still May 11. So that the date of June 21 for scientists fully expected. The eruption of an underwater volcano is due to the collapse of its walls – they're pretty thin. The number of large lava. Therefore, the strength of emissions exceed the submarine volcanoes in the ground 12-15 times. But this is not the reason for the occurrence of a tsunami, says Eugene Rogozhkin "Tsunamis can occur only when the natural disaster relief strongly alter the seabed. For example, a landslide. And it creates a tsunami. Eruption of the volcano itself (incidentally, a lot of submarine volcanoes on Earth – in the Pacific, Indian Ocean) tsunami does not create ", – says Rogozhkin. However, Italian seismologists, a year ago talking about the danger of a tsunami that will certainly flood the southern region of the country: Calabria, Campania, Sicily, part. And these places are popular with tourists. Many of them do not imply that a small picturesque island in the sea – the top of a huge volcano Empedocles, named after the ancient Greek philosopher and physician. True, the last time it erupted in the 30s of XIX century. Risks of natural hazards exist in many parts of the world, says president of information tourist service "BANK" Tatiana Dmitrov. Here, however, important psychological moment. "Now the media often incite the situation, causing panic and fear. This could trigger an outflow of tourists to popular destinations. I would very carefully to comment on such speculation.
