EAST WINDSOR — Publishing company McGraw-Hill said yesterday it will create what will be the Western Hemisphere’s largest private solar power generation plant here in the township to provide energy for a power-hungry data center.
In a release, the company said a partner investor will spend $60 million to build the plant on 50 acres near the data center, which opened on Princeton-Hightstown Road in 2008 and is consuming more energy as McGraw-Hill ramps up its digital publishing.
In addition, 25 acres of trees will be planted around the site, officials said in the release. “Our plan to use solar power underscores our commitment to green, sustainable business practices,” said Harold McGraw III, CEO of McGraw-Hill, which is partnering with New Jersey Resources Clean Energy Ventures in the project.
NJ Resources will own and operate the solar installation, which is expected to generate 18 million kilowatt hours annually, enough to power 1,500 households, according to NJ Resources spokesperson Michael Kinney.
The switch to solar will avoid the production of 12,687 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions from the atmosphere each year — roughly the effect of removing 2,488 cars from the road, officials added.
McGraw-Hill’s180,000 square foot data center supports the delivery of Standard & Poor’s RatingsDirect; Connect, its teaching and learning program for higher education; and Platts’ price assessments for liquefied natural gas.
All together, the energy produced by the solar system is expected to reduce McGraw-Hill’s annual global carbon emissions by 10 percent, according to the press release. “We are excited by the environmental benefits of using solar energy while helping us control costs,” McGraw said.
NJ Resources expects it will qualify for a 30 percent federal investment tax credit for its involvement in the project, as well as gain eligibility for Solar Renewable Energy Certificates, which can be sold to other companies seeking to meet their renewable energy requirements. “We have been looking at opportunities for a project like this, and we are happy to be able to provide this service,” Kinney said. “We have a few other projects like this, but nothing of this size.”
Slated to be completed in two phases — ending in December 2011 and March 2012, respectively — the project is estimated to create 294 jobs, according to a study by Rutgers University Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy on the “Economic Impacts of Energy Infrastructure Investments.

I my previous article "Compare MHP McGraw-Hill Publishing and ABX Barrick Gold ", I ask the reader to compare the option to either buying Barrick Gold Mining or McGraw-Hill Publishing. As stated I own neither company. In the past two months since the posting of this article the news has become even more grim, the unemployment now over 22%(the real figure) and home defaults falling off the edge of the Grand Canyon after a brief calm as the legal wrangling on foreclosures have been resolved. There is no doubt that the gold and it's gold and silver mining companies are just beginning their real bull market now and there will be years of increasing prices. You have to be living under a rock not to known this. It is also obvious from recent news now being published on the main networks which means the story is already old news, that many of the college degrees today are not worth the paper they are printed on(much like the USD). It has also been in the news that the universities and colleges have grossly over expanded in the past 10 years and are in the beginning of a rapid contraction. Being an intelligent reader you can add these basic facts together and come up with the effect this will have on the publishing companies supplying those big fat glossy new text books with even fatter prices on them to prospective students. The Student population at colleges and universities around the country and world is going to plummet and the students that do make it in will not buy the text books(See article on the site, "Below is a recent article from the New York Times"). Professors will keep their current text and use them until the pages fall out. Professors will also put several copies of the book used on reserve at the university library for their students to check out for the standard 2-3 hours to read and or copy select pages. McGraw-Hill and publishing companies like them with their egotistic driven thick, glossy books are going to be as lucrative as stock in the housing industry is today. So the question is do you want to be in a declining industry or a rising one? Think about it and Sell MHP and buy into the mining companies.
