Magnolia's Fox to play baseball for Mountaineers

NEW MARTINSVILLE - Recent Magnolia High School graduate Justin Fox, one of the most celebrated athletes in Blue Eagles sports history, will continue his athletic career at West Virginia University as a member of the Mountaineer baseball program.

Fox was a four-year letterwinner at Magnolia, where he served as the captain of the baseball team his junior and senior seasons.

He was elected captain of the Class AA all-state teams in baseball and football, as well as the Class AAA all-star teams in the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference during his senior year.

In baseball, Fox recorded a mind-boggling career batting average of .460, with 14 home runs and 108 RBIs.

Fox saved his best for last, dominating competitors during his senior season. At the plate, he was 40-for-64 for a .625 batting average. He scored 31 runs and knocked in 32. Once he was on the bases, Fox was perfect, stealing 12 bases in 12 attempts. On the mound, he was 6-1 in 45 innings with an ERA of 1.40 He struck out 85 batters, walking just nine.

During his senior season in football, he guided Magnolia to its second Class AA state football championship. But, he still found time to go to baseball camps in Harrisburg, Va., Tucson, Ariz., and Orlando, Fla.

"All of his achievements he deserved with hard work and self discipline," said Magnolia head baseball coach Dave Cisar. "Justin just had a great attitude, whether it was indoors or a outdoors practice or after practice, he had an exceptional work ethic. He likes the game, and it has been an extreme pleasure to have coached him for four years."

"In addition, Justin has been a terrific role model in school and on the diamond. Justin had several schools wanting him to come play baseball, but as soon as WVU showed interest, it was no doubt he was going to be a Mountaineer and wear the same blue and gold school colors. He was recruited as an infielder, and since he is such a versatile player, it will help him get playing time early. With his work ethic, it will help him in the college game."

In football, Fox received the 2010 Harrison H. Kennedy Award, presented annually to the top high school gridder in West Virginia.

Fox has rewritten the football record books at Magnolia High School. He surpassed Todd Morris in most completions, (414-342), attempts (785-675), and yards passing (6,645-5,291). He also vaulted over two-time Kennedy Award winner Mark Cisar in most touchdowns (68-64).

He will go down in history as the winningest quarterback in the state, prevailing in 45 of 53 games.

CFMC Awards Record-Breaking $72000 in Scholarships « GMCC ...

At award nights and receptions county-wide through June, the Community Foundation of Morgan County was proud to award $72,540 in scholarships to both high school and non-traditional students. This is the largest amount the foundation has ever awarded, and is more than $8,000 above last year’s scholarship awards.

The scholarship cycle began on November 15, 2010 and applications were due in January and February of this year. Each CFMC scholarship has different criteria such as grade point averages, school and community activities, high school attended, and college majors. The criterion was selected by the original donors of each scholarship fund.

The CFMC Scholarship Advisory Committee, along with several other committees comprised of scholarship donors and school officials, reviewed the applications to select the recipients. The CFMC Board of Directors then approved the selections at their April meeting.

Tom Zoss, executive director for the CFMC, presented most of the awards to scholars in May and June.

“This is one of the highlights of my year,” he said. “It is a privilege to represent the generous donors from years past and to present students with a gift that will help them make higher education possible.”
