Weak shooting dooms Indiana All-Star girls

LOUISVILLE — The Indiana Girls All-Star basketball team was on cruise control for much of the past week. Unfortunately, the squad didn't shift into high gear until it was too late and the result was a 64-57 defeat to the Kentucky All-Stars on Friday at Bellarmine University.

“Kentucky got the loose balls,” Indiana coach David Miller said. “Kentucky outworked us and they were more physical than we were.”

The Concordia Lutheran varsity girls basketball coach enjoyed a relatively easy week of preparation. The senior squad took apart the Junior All-Stars in a pair of exhibition games by an average margin of more than 46 points each game. Against Kentucky, the hosts were not willing to roll over in any way.

“We talked about that and it shouldn't be a factor,” Miller said. “You should just come out and play.”

Kentucky led in the first half by as many as seven (28-21) and took a 30-25 advantage into halftime. The Indiana squad was anemic offensively, as it connected on 28.1 percent (9 of 32) of its shots.

“It was hard to get into a rhythm,” Snider High School standout Liza Clemons said. “It was hard to knock down shots. But we've got to move forward and look toward the next game.”

Clemons and her former teammate at Elmhurst High School, Lacia Gorman, were used sparingly Friday. Clemons totaled just a single point and a rebound in nine minutes of action, while the Wayne High School guard had two points and a rebound in six minutes.

“We have to start off the game better,” Gorman said. “We're going to have to rebound better (Kentucky out-rebounded Indiana 55-46) and put more pressure on the ball. They were getting open shots.”

Indiana was cold from the field overall, but particularly from three-point range. The Hoosier team sank just four of their 26 (15.4 percent) attempts from beyond the arc.

“Kentucky contested some shots pretty well,” Miller said. “But I don't think that we set ourselves up to get our shooters open in comfortable positions to catch and shoot.”

Indiana Miss Basketball Bria Goss (Ben Davis High School) led her team with 23 points and eight rebounds. But the Kentucky recruit misfired on 15 of her 22 shots in doing so.

Miami of Ohio recruit Courtney Larson (Columbus North High School) added 10 points and five rebounds in the defeat.

Both CNHSmedia.com and Log yearbook received Pacemakers, NSPA’s highest honor. It was the first-ever designation for the web site. Junior Haedyn Scgalski is editor, sophomore Patrick Angle is web master and Rachel McCarver is adviser. This marked the yearbook’s sixth Pacemaker. 2010 Log Editor is Maggie Kim; adviser is  Kim Green. Both media also placed in their respective Best of Show categories: CNHSmedia, fifth, and Log, third.

In competition against scholastic journalists from around the nation, three students earned honors in National Write-off competition April 16: junior Katie Kutsko, Superior in Newsmagazine Design; senior Niki Prestel, Excellent in Yearbook Cover/Endsheet Design; and senior Keonna Durham, Honorable Mention in Yearbook Photo: Environmental Portrait.

Eight students attended the four-day convention which featured over 200 sessions and speakers, including professional journalists Lisa and Laura Ling. In addition to Scgalski, Kutsko, Prestel, and Durham, seniors Patrick Frensemeier, Jason Latimer, Elizabeth Notestine and Cade Jorgensen also attended.

The convention took place at the Anaheim Marriott April 14-17.
